(This selection of twenty poems by the fourth-century Gree...)
This selection of twenty poems by the fourth-century Greek theologian, St Gregory Nazianzen, represents his Christological writing. It includes the poems ‘On the Son’ and ‘On the Incarnation’, written to defend the orthodoxy of the Council of Nicea. In these poems, Gregory meets Arian and Apollinarist heretics on their own ground, demonstrating that Christians are as cultured as the pagans. There are also several hymns, smaller poems, and prayers in which St Gregory reveals something of his own inner life. There is a substantial Introduction.

(St. Cyril of Alexandria: The Christological Controversy d...)
St. Cyril of Alexandria: The Christological Controversy describes the turmoil of 5th century Christianity seeking to articulate its beliefs on the person of Christ. The policies of the Theodosian dynasty and the conflicting interests of the patriarchal sees are set as the context of the controversy between Nestorius of Constantinople and Cyril of Alexandria, a bitter dispute that racked the entire oecumene. The historical analysis expounds the arguments of both sides, particularly the Christology of Cyril which was adopted as a standard. Many major texts are presented in new translations, some of which have never before appeared in English. These writings are essential reading in the history of doctrine. The work will be an indispensable resource for all students of the period: theologians and Byzantinists.

(The Christians, from the very outset, committed their the...)
The Christians, from the very outset, committed their theology and prayer to the form of the song. The hymnal elements in the New Testament are among the earliest of all strands, some of them composed within a decade of the death of Jesus. From the third century onwards it was their custom to light the lamps of the house when dusk fell, and sing a hymn, for the onset of evening marked the new liturgical day in the earliest centuries. This collection of some of the most charming of the hymns of the Early Church presents the original Greek and Latin verse with a facing translation and a pronunciation guide for the Byzantine Greek. They range from simple chants such as the Phos Hilaron, comparing Christ to the "cheerful light" of a lamp, to sophisticated pieces by some of the great rhetoricians such as Gregory Nazianzen, Ambrose, Synesios, and Romanos. This is a book that will delight both academic and church readerships.

St. Gregory of Nazianzus (ca. 390-391) is one of the most important theologians of the early Christian Church and was without question one of the most learned men of his generation. This present study is the first critical analysis of the man, his writings and inner life in the English language. It offers definitive insight into the mind of one of the greatest protagonists of Nicene theology, and through his extraordinary personality, opens a window onto the world of late antiquity and the place of the Christian Church in it.

This book gives a vivid introduction to the leading figures, key themes and values of this living and ancient form of Christian spirituality. At the centre of the Byzantine experience are ideas which western Christians share, and from which they still have much to learn: beauty, endurance, and hopefulness.

(The early Christian monks of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine ...)
The early Christian monks of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine were the spiritual heroes of their age - fleeing the security of civilization for the desert, where they sought God in lives of prayer, contemplation, and radical simplicity. This book is a portable collection of their teachings, and those of their contemplative contemporaries, ranging from the fourth through the eleventh centuries. It is arranged to the traditional model of three ascending "books": Praktikos (practice), Theoretikos (theory), and Gnosis (knowledge). Each book consists of 100 "sentences" - aphorisms or thoughts. Each sentence is intended to be read and meditated upon for an entire day - just as the monks themselves might have done as they went about their work.

This work asks the question: What did Christianity do to build a civilization? In the present age, law has been used energetically to micro-manage human societies, values, and aspirations. But did l aw work that way in antiquity? This little book is some form of answer. It is a book on law and legal thought as it emerged in its formative ages of the Christian past; it asks what the ancient writers and theorists did w ith law and legal thought. It is part history, part philosophy, and more than anything else an intorduction to issues of law and legal adjudication in the Patristic and Byzantine eras.
