Anthony Valerio was born on March 13, 1940 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of William and Gertrude Valerio.
Anthony Valerio received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1962.
Anthony Valerio worked as an editor at major publishing companies and as a writing instructor. He has written several books on Italian subjects. His works include The Mediterranean Runs Through Brooklyn (1982), Valentino and the Great Italians (1986), the 1991 compilation Bart: A Life of A. Bartlett Giamatti by Him and about Him, and others.
The Mediterranean Runs Through Brooklyn is a volume of fictional sketches, with each sketch built around a member of the narrator's New York Italian family - for instance, his mother, father, sister, aunts, and uncles.
Valerio's next book, Valentino and the Great Italians, as the title implies, contains essays about famous people of Italian origin, including early film actor Rudolph Valentino. Other men and women discussed in the volume include opera singer Mario Lanza, explorer Christopher Columbus, baseball player Joe DiMaggio, revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, automobile executive Lee Iacocca, and politician Mario Cuomo. Valerio also includes an essay about the woman who inspired Italian Renaissance painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
Valerio compiled the writings of the late major league baseball commissioner and former Yale University president A. Bartlett Giamatti, along with contributions from friends and acquaintances, in Bart: A Life of A. Bartlett Giamatti. The volume includes many photographs, most of them from Giamatti's involvement with baseball.
Valerio's latest work Semmelweis: the Women's Doctor was published in 2019.
During his lifetime, Anthony Valerio taught at New York University, the City University of New York, and Wesleyan University. He lectures widely in the United States and Europe and has been a fiction judge at PEN and the Authors Guild.
