Fauchery dabbled in painting and literature for some years, and traveled with Nadar for a time. In 1852 he left France for Melbourne, Australia, to join the great gold rush. Returning to Europe in 1856, he applied for an official photographic mission to Australia, India and China (April 1857) and, with some assistance from the French government, departed again for Melbourne, where he worked throughout 1858. In 1860 he traveled through Manila and China, then on to Japan, where he died.
