Gerashchenko graduated from the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute (1968).
He worked as a builder at the plant of Rostselmash (1962-1965), a contributor to a magazine “Don” (1968-1982), the director of the Bureau of propagation of fiction at the Union of Rostov Writers (1982-1990), an engineer of the Don Basin Water-Management Joint Company (1990-2002) .
Gerashchenko paid much attention to environmental problems. In this regard, he worked at Novovoronezh NPP on the creative mission of the Union of Writers (1980). In Voronezh he organized retreats for the Don International Environmental Committee (1991). From 1989 he was the chairman of this organization.
