Kersjes, Anton Frans Jan was born on August 17, 1923 in Arnhem, Netherlands. Son of Anton Frans Jan and Elisabeth (Peperkamp) Kersjes.


First violinist Arnhem Symphony Orchestra, 1940-1941. Choir conductor, 1945-1946, 49. Co-founder Kunstmaand Chamber Orchestra, 1953.

Conductor Netherlands Ballet Sonia Gaskell, 1953-1961, Netherlands Opera Company, 1955-1960, Amsterdam Ballet, 1960-1962. 1st conductor Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, 1953-1983, principal guest conductor, 1983-1991. Conductor Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, All Netherlands Symphony Orchestra including Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestras Radio Hilversum.

Guest conductor Netherlands Opera Company leader conductor's class Amsterdam Muzieklyceum, Sweelinck Conservatory, 1969-1979. Leader conductor's and opera class, adjunct director Maastricht Conservatory, 1988-1990. Guest lecturer Rijkshogeschool Maastricht.
