António Palolo was born in 1946 in Evora, Alentejo, Portugal.
Between the end of the 1960s and 1978, António Palolo made an extraordinary series of films and experiments in film. His first films, shot in 8 mm, are black-and-white animations, constructed according to a cut-and-paste methodology and associating, with great sense of humour, images taken from magazines with geometric elements.
In 1969, Palolo's adoption of a Super 8 camera marked a significant shift in his language and a clearer separation from his style as a painter. The films from the early 1970s include Drawings / Lines (1971), a rhythmic sequence of drawings in continuous movement, directly inscribed onto the film strip.
Joaquim Bravo, Álvaro Lapa and António Palolo were three Portuguese painters who were bound by friendship and the complicity of times and places they have shared.
In 1995-1996 the Modern Art Centre José de Azeredo Perdigão, from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, presented in a great exhibition artworks of all António Palolo’s artistic path.
Antonio Pablo is mostly known as a self-taught painter whose work veered between Pop and abstraction. His black-and-white animations from around 1968 - 1969 are most closely connected to his painting in their juxtaposition of figurative and geometric elements, a recurrent characteristic of his canvases. His works are represented in the Soares dos Reis National Museum and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.
