He studied at the Alexandre Herculano School in Oporto and the Passos Manuel School.Educated at Lisbon and graduated with an arts degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Lisbon in 1941.
He left to teach history at the Pedro Nunes School until 1965 when he became a lecturer at the Institute of Higher Culture until 1969.
He was appointed an examiner in Portuguese in 1966, 1967 and 1968 at Schools in Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. He also visited schools in the United States of America and in Germany. He was a delegate to the Portuguese Atlantic Committee at Coimbra in 1970 and later that year he attended the NATO education conference at Oxford, England.
A man of intense enthusiasm for European culture, gifted with great skills for conveying it to others. Strongly feudal in his outlook but shrewd enough to accept that Angolans cannot be educationally suppressed.
