Hichens began his career as a planner at Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation (nowadays Rio Tinto PLC) in 1960. Nine years later he took a position of a manager of corporation planning at Rio Algom. Then in 1972, Antony became a finance director at Redland PLC. In 1981, he was appointed a managing director of finance at Consolidated Gold Fields PLC., where he served until 1989.
Hichens worked as a chairman of Caradon PLC (nowadays Novar PLC) from 1985 to 1998. In 1993, he held a position of a director at QBE Holdings (Europe) Limited, where he worked until 2000. Also in 1995, Antony became a director at Eni Lasmo PLC and held it for six years. In 1999, he took the same position at DS Smith PLC., where he served until 2006. In addition, Hichens worked as a director at WaterRower (UK) Ltd. from 2002 to 2007. Since 2004 he has been a director at the Coastal Forces Heritage Trust. Also in 2008, Antony became a director at JPMorgan Income & Capital Trust PLC., where he had served for five years. In 2014 he was made a director at Bridport Literary Festival Limited.
