April Sinclair was born on April 8, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She was raised on Chicago's South Side during the times of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements.
Sinclair earned her bachelor's degree at Western Illinois before moving to California where she took graduate courses at San Francisco State University.
During her career, Sinclair has worked for over 15 years in community service programs, has directed a countywide hunger coalition, and has taught reading and writing to inner-city children and youth. She currently works as a freelance writer, living in Oakland.
