Ara SARKSYAN, USSR Sculptor. Full member, USSR Academy, of Arts, since 1958; board member, USSR Union of Artists; Popular Artist of Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, since 1950; Director, Yerevan Arts and Theater Institute. Order of Red Banner of Labor, 1956; other orders; medals. Member, Communist Party, since 1939.

Background

SARKSYAN, Ara was born in 1902.

Education

1924 graduated Vienna Academy, of Arts.

Career

Sculptural portraits of: composers Richard Roberts (1922) and Karl Wanchel (1923); artist V. Vagarshyan. Painter O. Zardaryan. Poets N. Zaryan and Ye.

Cherents (1957); marble bust of Armenian Bolshevik S. S. Spandaryan. Monumental bas-reliefs “Soviet Armenia” and “Soviet Azerbaydzhan” (1935) for facade of USSR Pavilion at International World Fair in New York. Monuments to Stalin in Yerevan and for All-Union Agriculture Exhibition in Moscow.

“The May Uprising” in Leninakan. Sculptural compositions “To Arms, My People!”, “Storming of the Heights”, etc. (1941-1945); memorials to: S. M. Kirov in Kirovakan (1942).

Hero of Labor N. G. Stepanyan in Yerevan (1950). Lenin in Kamo (1959), etc.
