Paulus was born on July 14, 1957, in Germany; the son of Manfred and Anne Liese (Wolf) Paulus.

Paulus received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemistry from the University of Tubingen in 1986. He studied at Northeastern University’s Barnett Institute from 1986 to 1988.
Paulus began his career as a postdoctoral fellow and consultant at Beckman Coulter Company in 1988. A year later he took a position of a group leader at Novartis, where he worked until 1997. In 1994, he was a visiting scientist at ISIS Pharmaceuticals and held it for a year. In 1998, Aran was appointed a R&D director at Aclara Biosciences. In September 1999, he became a project leader of proteomics and microfluidics at Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation.
Aran was an advanced research team manager at Amersham Biosciences from September 2001 to May 2003. Then he took a position of a R&D manager new technologies and proteomics applications at Bio-Rad Laboratories, where Paulus worked from September 2003 to September 2012.
A year later Aran was appointed a director of biochemistry at Optokey and held it until April 2014. Since October 2012 he has been a technical consultant at Wolfrider-Consulting. Also since 2014 Paulus has been a lc-ms integration program manager at Thermofisher Scientific.
Paulus hold the patents for the following inventions: Affinity methods and compositions employing electronic control of pH, Electronic control of pH and ionic strength, Stain-free protein quantification and normalization, Phosphopeptide enrichment of compositions by fractionation on ceramic hydroxyapatite and etc.
