(The former treatise ton men prOton. Literally, the first ...)
The former treatise ton men prOton. Literally, the first treatise. The use of the superlative is common enough and by no means implies, though it allows, a third volume. This use of prOtos where only two are compared is seen between the Baptist and Jesus (Joh 1:15), John and Peter (Joh 20:4). The idiom is common in the papyri (Robertson, Grammar, pp. 662, 669). The use of men solitarium here, as Hackett notes, is common in Acts. It is by no means true that men requires a following de by contrast. The word is merely a weakened form of men = surely, indeed. The reference is to the “first treatise” and merely emphasizes that. The use of logos (word) for treatise or historical narrative is common in ancient Greek as in Herodotus 6 and 9. Plato (Phaedo, p. 61 B) makes a contrast between muthos and logos. I made epoiesamen.

(A. T. Robertson was a renowned Greek New Testament schola...)
A. T. Robertson was a renowned Greek New Testament scholar. His work on the Greek language is still consulted today. Word Pictures in the New Testament is his insightful treatment of that book. In the Greek New Testament, there are a variety of meaningful pictorial nuances implicit in the Greek constructions. These nuances are often lost in translation. Word Pictures in the New Testament explains them. Robertson examines Greek constructions from many different Testament passages. He provides background to many of the Greek words and their connotations in the original Greek, thereby shedding new light on the meaning of passages. Many readers have gained a new, richer understanding of the New Testament by studying Word Pictures in the New Testament. And although no technical knowledge is required to study this work, familiarity with the Greek language makes this work much easier to digest. Consequently, it is ideal for pastors, theologians, and students of the New Testament. Tim Perrine CCEL Staff Writer This edition features an artistic cover, a new promotional introduction, an index of scripture references, and links for scripture references to the appropriate passages.

(Excerpt: ...meals of the Jews answered to the present Eng...)
Excerpt: ...meals of the Jews answered to the present English breakfast (in the forenoon and often near noon), and dinner (at or after dark); and so in our cities. In the time of King James, as in many of our country homes now, the meal towards noon answered to dinner, and the night meal to supper. Hence a certain confusion in the older and more recent English versions. In verses 16, 17 the right word would be dinner, according to city usage, and so elsewhere. § 115. GREAT CROWDS FOLLOW HIM, AND HE WARNS THEM TO COUNT THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP TO HIM (COMP. §§ 70 and 83 ) Probably in Perea Luke 14:25-35 25 Now there went with him great multitudes: and he turned, and said unto them, 26 If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whosoever doth not bear his own cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have wherewith to complete it? 29 Lest haply, when he hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all that behold begin to mock him, 30 saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31 Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace. 33 So therefore whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. 34 Salt therefore is good: but if even the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? 35 It is fit neither for the land nor for the dunghill: men cast it out. Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(Dr. Robertson's six-volume set "Word Pictures in the New ...)
Dr. Robertson's six-volume set "Word Pictures in the New Testament" and is an excellent reference work when one does not know Greek, but would like to understand the Greek language the New Testament was written in. Many nuggets are contained in this wonderful set that explain just what a particular verse meant by the construction of the Greek. In Greek, just as in English, how one states something (the tenses of verbs, conditional clauses, meanings of participles, etc.) can add a richness to the writing that might be missed upon casual reading of a text translated out of the original tongue. But, the subtleties, the nuances, and the shades of meaning from the Greek are often are often lost in translations. Dr. Robertson has attempted to fill in the missing data that all translations from one language to another suffer. In his case, from Koine Greek into English. For the Pastor, teacher or lay person who wants to know the truth in a passage as recorded in the original Greek, this set is an invaluable asset.

As in 1Co 1:1; 2Co 1:1; Ro 1:1. At Ephesus en EphesOi. In Aleph and B these words are inserted by later hands, though both MSS. give the title Pros Ephesious. Origen explains the words tois hagiois tois ousin as meaning “the saints that are” (genuine saints), showing that his MSS. did not have the words en EphesOi. The explanation of the insertion of these words has already been given in the remarks on “The Destination” as one copy of the general letter that was preserved in Ephesus. It is perfectly proper to call it the Epistle to the Ephesians if we understand the facts.

An orderly world is not possible apart from mind and a mind commensurate with so vast a problem. To admit that mind is to admit God. But the world can be without God even if God exists. (Excerpt from Practical and Social Aspects of Christianity...)
Excerpt from Practical and Social Aspects of Christianity, the Wisdom of James In August, 1912, it was my privilege to deliver a course of lectures at the Northfield Bible Conference. There were many requests for the publication of the addresses. I shall never forget the bright faces of the hundreds who gathered in beautiful Sage Chapel at 8:30 on those August mornings. In August, 1913, the lectures were repeated at the New York Chautauqua and at the Winona Bible Conference. There were renewed appeals for publication, but it was not possible to put the material into shape because of my work on "A Grammar of the Greek New Testament in the Light of Historical Research." I have expanded the lectures a good deal and have added some introductory discussion about James himself. I have in mind ministers, social workers, students of the Bible, Sunday-School teachers, and all lovers of the word of God and of rightness of life. Technical matters are placed in parentheses or in footnotes so that the reader may go on without these if he cares to do so. There is a freshness in the Greek text not possible in the English, but those who do not know Greek may still read this book with entire ease. I do not claim that these addresses are a detailed commentary on the Epistle of James. They are expository talks, based, I trust, on sober, up-to-date scholarship and applied to modern life. It is the old gospel in the new age that we need and must know how to use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Excerpt from A Short Grammar of the Greek New Testament: ...)
Excerpt from A Short Grammar of the Greek New Testament: For Students Familiar With Elements of Greek I have been a teacher of the Greek New Testament for twenty years and a student of Greek for thirty. But time is a poor measure of one's real interest in the Greek tongue if he is a Greek lover, a true Philhellene. This noble tongue contains no treasure comparable to the New Testament. We could much more easily give up Plato and Demosthenes than John and Paul. I count it a privilege and a Joy to help young ministers to a right apprehension of the Greek New Testament. At bottom exegesis is grammatical. That is not all of exegesis, but it is the true beginning. A few years ago I published a little Syllabus of New Testament Greek Syntax for the use of one of the Greek classes here. The book was used in a number of other institutions also. I desire now to replace it by a more extensive and comprehensive discussion of the field of New Testament grammar and yet not one too long. During the years, in fact quite recently, I have received numerous requests for a New Testament grammar not so elementary as Huddilston, Green, or Harper and Weidner, and yet not so minute and exhaustive as Winer, Blass, or Moulton. The man who has studied the old Greek does not wish to take up a primer, though ho may not be ready for the more critical minutiæ of a book like Winer. New Testament grammar is taught the last year in most of the colleges and is begun also the first year in the theological seminaries. It is just this definite and unoccupied field (the last year in college and the first in the seminary) that this Short Grammar seeks to enter. There is here an unfilled place in American educational method. I have written a number of chapters of a larger grammar of the Greek New Testament on the scale of Winer which I shall finish as rapidly as I can. "Ministers and seminarians need every encouragement they can get to not cut corners and to give themselves to the irreplaceable study of the Word of God in its original languages. This book is a classic, written by one who not only knew the Greek New Testament, but loved it. May ministers and men preparing for the ministry have the fire of love for the Greek New Testament re-kindled in their hearts. We need this reprint, and it needs to be in the hands of those who long to 'rightly divide the Word of Truth.' - Pastor William Shishko

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Portions of this volume were delivered as lectures on the L. P. Stone Foundation the last week in February 1916, before the Princeton Theological Seminary. The author recalls with pleasure the kindly interest of Faculty and Students during those days. The lectures have been revised and enlarged and adapted to the purpose of the present volume. It is a gratifying sign of the times that modem Jewish scholars exhibit a friendly spirit towards Jesus and Christianity. It is highly important that Jews and Christians understand each other. That is the best way to appreciate and to admire the good in each other. The treatment of Jesus by the Pharisees and of the Pharisees by Jesus is an inflammable subject for some minds, but it is one that has to be discussed and, indeed, has been discussed with great fide Uty. Recent efforts to get a new conception of the Pharisees make it necessary to review the whole problem in the hght of the new knowledge. If the story is a sad one, it must be remembered that the facts of history cannot be changed. We must learn the lesson of love and mutual forbearance from the strife of the past. (This is a revision of the work by Dr. Marvin R. Vincent. ...)
This is a revision of the work by Dr. Marvin R. Vincent. They use more scientific methods of philology. No longer are Greek tenses and propositions explained in terms of conjectural English translations or interchanged according to the whim of the interpreter. Comparative grammar has thrown a flood of light on the real meaning of New Testament forms and idioms. New Testament writers are no longer explained as using one construction for another. New light has come also from the papyri discoveries in Egypt. Unusual Greek words from the standpoint of the literary critic or classical scholar are here found in everyday use in letters and business and public documents. The New Testament Greek is now known to be not a new or peculiar dialect of the Greek language, but the very lingo of the time. The vernacular Koine, the spoken language of the day, appears in the New Testament as in these scraps of Oxyrhynchus and Fayum papyri. There are specimens of the literary Koine in the papyri as also in the writings of Luke, the Epistles of Paul, The Epistle to the Hebrews. A new Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament will come in due time which will take note of the many startling discoveries from the Greek papyri and inscriptions first brought to notice in their bearing on the New Testament by Dr. Adolf Deissmann, then of Heidelber, now of Berlin. His Bible Studies and his Light from the Ancient East are accessible to students unfamiliar with the German originals.

A. (Greek New Testament for twenty years and a student of Gre...)
Greek New Testament for twenty years and a student of Greek for thirty. But time is a poor measure of ones real interest in the Greek tongue if he is aG reek lover, a true Philhellene. This noble tongue contains no treasure comparable to theN ew Testament. We could much more easily give up Plato and Demosthenes than John and Paul. I count it a privilege and a joy to help young ministers to a right apprehension of the Greek New Testament. At bottom exegesis is grammatical. That is not all of exegesis, but it is the true beginning. A few years ago I published a littleS yllabus of New Testament Greek Syntax for the use of one of the Greek classes here. The book was used in a number of other institutions also. I desire now to replace it by a more extensive and comprehensive discussion of the field of New Testament grammar and yet not one too long. During the years, in fact quite recently, I have received numerous requests for aN ew Testament grammar not so elementary asH uddilston, Green, or Harper and Weidner, and yet not so minute and exhaustive as Winer, Blass, or Moulton. The man who has studied the old Greek does not wish to take up a primer, though he may not be readyJ or the more critical minutiae of a book like Winer. New Testament grammar is taught the last year in most of the colleges and is begun also the first year in the theological seminaries. It is just this definite and unoccupied field (the last year in collie and the first in the seminary) that thisS hort Grammar seeks to enter. There is here an unfilled place in American educational method. I have written a number of chapters of a larger grammar of the Greek New Testament on the scale of Winer which I shall finish as rapidly as I can. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ...particular supposition, implying nothing as to the fulfilment of the condition, it takes a present or past tense of the indicative with cl." The words to which I object, besides "particular," are "implying nothing as to the fulfilment of the condition." This condition pointedly implies the fulfilment of the condition. It is the condition of actuality, reality, Wirklichkeit, and not mere "possibility" as Farrar has it (see above) a la Goodwin. This is the crux of the whole matter. Once see that the first class condition with the ind. implies the reality of the premise, all else follows naturally. In the discussion of the second class condition Goodwin' properly says: "When the protasis states a present or past supposition, implying that the condition is not or was not fulfilled, etc." This is the condition of unreality as the other is that of reality and the indicative is, of course, used with both. Hence the subj. and the opt. conditions fall apart to themselves as undetermined. The point about all the four classes to note is that the form of the condition has to do only with the statement, not with the absolute truth or certainty of the matter. Examples will be given directly to show that the second class condition is sometimes used where the fact is just the opposite. The same thing is true of the first class condition. We must distinguish always therefore between the fact and the statement of the fact. The conditional sentence deals only with the statement. This point is clearly seen in Ki'1hnerGerth, II, p. 465, except that the third class is lost sight of and merged with the first. BurtonJ follows Goodwin through all his ramifications. A word further is demanded by way of...

(Epochs in the Life of Jesus on both sides of the water ha...)
Epochs in the Life of Jesus on both sides of the water has emboldened me, in response to many requests, to publish a com panion volume on Paul. Here also detailed critical discussions will be subordinated to the positive interpretation of the story. The books are legion where one can find in English and German all sides of nearly every point of criticism in the lives of both Jesus and Paul. Critical discussion is invaluable, but that is not the service attempted here. After all, criticism is only a means to an end. The aim of the present work is rather to give as the result of criticism a constructive picture of Paul and his work as set forth in the A cts and Paul sown Epistles. I have faced the manifold problems of criticism which meet one at every turn in such a study, and have formed my own judgment where the evidence justified such a conclusion. I am still a learner about Paul and still in the dark on many points. But enough is known (reasonably clear, I think, to one who is open to historical evidence) to enable one to project a vivid and true outline of the life of Paul. The main outline is all that is here attempted. Questions of geography and general history are touched upon only incidentally.

(No grammar of the Greek New Testament has had so many edi...)
No grammar of the Greek New Testament has had so many editions and so many translations since its first appearance in 1908. This fact is proof of the need of such a book in harmony with modern philological knowledge (comparative philology) and the new discoveries concerning the papyri and inscriptions. Not all students care for this type of grammar and some prefer the traditional type. This grammar meets the definite need of those who do desire to be introduced to the new linguistic learning. Corrections of "errata" have been made in the text where practicable, and there is given a list of "Corrigenda" in addition. Completely rewritten from its first appearance, this book has been the textbook of choice in innumerable schools all over the world, passing through many foreign translations. It is a book for students familiar with the elements of Greek and designed as an introduction to the larger grammar. In this Tenth Edition, Parts I, III and IV are the work of A. T. Robertson, Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, while Part II was authored by W. Hersey Davis, also a Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Quotations:
Here are some quotes of Robertson linking the study of the Greek New Testament to preaching:
"The greatest proof that the Bible is inspired is that it has withstood so much bad preaching!"
"God pity the poor preacher who has to hunt for something to preach — and the people who have to listen!"
"Preaching.. is the most dangerous thing in the world.".
