Ariana Grande is an American singer and actress who has been making waves world over for her singing prowess. Grande is one of the world’s leading recording artists with six Grammy nominations and one win to her name, along with platinum certifications for each of her five full-length albums. An entertainer since childhood, she was first known for her teenage acting roles on Nickelodeon, but since evolved into one of the most powerful singers.
Background
Ethnicity:
Ariana Grande has Italian roots, she is of half Sicilian and half Abruzzese origin.
Ariana Grande-Butera was born to Joan Grande and Edward Butera on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida, United States. Ariana’s parents had relocated to Florida from New York when her mother Joan was pregnant with her. While her father owned a graphic design firm, her mother was the CEO of Horse-McCann Communications. She has one older half-brother, Frankie, also a successful musical theater performer.
Since a very young age, Ariana Grande was very fond of acting. Demonstrating an aptitude for acting and singing as a child, Grande took part in children’s theatre, winning roles in Florida productions of Annie and Beauty and the Beast. After winning a role in the Broadway play 13, Grande and her family moved to New York, before setting their sights on Los Angeles. Ariana's parents separated when she was around 9 or 10 years old.
Education
Ariana Grande pursued her primary education at Pine Crest School and North Broward Preparatory School. Grande left school to pursue her music career; however, she continued to be enrolled so that her tutors could send her materials and help her study. Her favorite subject in school was science.
Ariana Grande’s big break came in 2009 when she was chosen to play the role of Cat Valentine in the sitcom Victorious, which was aired by Nickelodeon. Renowned actress Elizabeth Gillies was also a part of this sitcom’s impressive star cast. In 2010, Ariana Grande decided to take a break from her acting assignments and focused on polishing her singing skills. A year later, her song Give it Up from the soundtrack of Victorious was released. Her voice got the attention of Monte Lipman, a top executive of the label Republic Records, who was moved by her singing prowess. Soon, Ariana Grande signed a contract with the record label and in late 2011 and her first single "Put your hearts up' was released.
The same year she dubbed for the character Princess Diaspro from the animated series Winx Club, for a total of 13 episodes. She was also the voice of the lead character from Snowflake, The White Gorilla, an animated film that was dubbed in English. The soundtracks Victorious 2.0 and Victorious 3.0 were released in 2012, for which Ariana Grande lent her voice in two songs. These tracks were "Don’t You (Forget About Me)" and "L.A Boyz."
She next played Snow White in the theatrical adaptation of the famous literary work A Snow White Christmas. Veterans like Neil Patrick Harris and Charlene Tilton were also a part of this performance, which was staged at the famous venue Pasadena Playhouse.
Ariana Grande was chosen to play the character of Sam Puckett in the popular American sitcom Sam & Cat, which was aired on Nickelodeon during 2013-2014. However, the series wasn’t revived after the end of the first season, despite its popularity.
She released her debut album Yours Truly in August 2013. “The Way” was the first single from Grande’s debut album, Yours Truly, a record that also featured the hits "Baby I" and "Right There." The album, produced by super-producer Babyface, showed a maturing Grande, and 1990s soul influences from pop diva Mariah Carey. The 2014 release My Everything sold 169,000 copies in its first week, debuting at No. 1. The single “Problem,” featuring Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, preceded the album release and debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100, selling more than 400,000 copies upon its release. “Break Free” with Zedd and “Love Me Harder” with The Weeknd followed, each climbing toward the top of the charts.
During the summer of 2014, Grande teamed up with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj on the single “Bang Bang,” a track that debuted at No. 6 and peaked at No. 3 in the United States. The album spawned another hit single “One Last Time,” which reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Grande had three hit singles from My Everything on the Billboard chart at the same time.
In 2015 Grande released Christmas & Chill, a holiday album, and the single "Focus," which debuted at number seven on the Billboard's Hot 100. In February 2016, she released her third album Dangerous Woman, and the title track debuted at number 10 on the Hot 100 that March. She made music history with the track's success, becoming the first artist to have the lead singles from her first three albums debut in the Top 10. Dangerous Woman, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, also features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Macy Gray, and Future.
The pop diva returned to television with a guest appearance on Scream Queens in 2015, and she hit the big screen in a cameo appearance in Zoolander 2 in 2016. She also starred as Penny Pingleton, Tracy Turnblad's best friend, in NBC's Hairspray Live! in December 2016.
On 22 May 2017, an explosion occurred just outside the Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom, where Ariana Grande had just performed at a concert, which was a part of her Dangerous Woman Tour. The explosion killed 22 people and wounded 116, including many young adults and children. Less than a day after the attack, Grande suspended her Dangerous Woman tour. She returned to Manchester 13 days after the attack to perform a benefit concert on June 4 for the bombing victims, enlisting friends and fellow superstars to perform including Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Liam Gallagher, Chris Martin, and Pharrell Williams. Before the concert, Grande visited fans who had been injured in the attack, and she also offered 14,000 free tickets to people who had been at the May 22 concert.
Grande returned to the charts in April 2018 with "No Tears Left to Cry," the catchy, upbeat response to the previous year's Manchester concert bombing. She followed in June with the dance track "The Light Is Coming," featuring Minaj; dropped the sultry "God Is a Woman" in mid-July; and delivered "Breathin" in September. The four releases were included in her highly anticipated album Sweetener. The overall success of Sweetener led to her first Grammy win, for Best Pop Vocal Album, in February 2019.
Grande quickly returned to the studio to produce her fifth album, Thank U, Next. The title track hit airwaves in early November 2018, and another chart-topper, "7 Rings," arrived in January 2019. The album debuted in February to strong praise, alongside a new single, "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored."
In April 2019 the 25-year-old songstress demonstrated her drawing power by becoming the youngest performer ever to headline Coachella, as well as just the fourth woman to earn the honor. Her collaborations from around this time include "Rule the World," with 2 Chainz, "Monopoly," with Victoria Monét, and "Boyfriend," with Social House. Later that year Grande joined Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey for the single "Don't Call Me Angel," from Charlie's Angels soundtrack.
In February 2020 Grande made a guest appearance on season 2 of Jim Carrey's Showtime series Kidding.

Religion
Ariana was raised a Roman Catholic but strayed away from the faith after comments by Pope Benedict on homosexuality (particularly since her brother Frankie is gay) and working women.
She now follows Kabbalah's teachings alongside Frankie, and says: "the basis lies in the idea that if you’re kind to others, good things will happen to you."
Politics
By the time Grande voted in her first election, she was already a Democrat. She tweeted her excitement about being part of the democratic process for the first time in 2012 and encouraged her fans to vote as well.5 About Obama’s speech after his victory, she tweeted: "Obama’s speech is so incredible and inspiring! So proud of our country and all the Americans who had their voices heard this election!"
Ariana Grande endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders' second presidential bid in November 2019.
Views
Throughout her career, Grande has been famous for her feminism, something she says stems from her family. Daughter of a female CEO and niece of the very first Italian-American to be welcomed into Washington DC’s National Press Club, she has frequently decried everyday sexism and misogyny.
She has rallied against industry sexism, the media defining famous women by their famous boyfriends, body-shaming, the double standards over the responses to some of her more provocative videos and the responses to those by provocative male stars, and defended pop star Kesha in her legal battles with producer Dr. Luke.
When she’s not performing, the pop superstar supports various charitable causes including Kids Who Care, a group she co-founded that raises money for charities in the South Florida region. Ariana organized and performed alongside loads of other stars at the One Love Manchester concert to raise money for the victims of the Manchester terror attack. She also released another version of One Last Time, Somewhere Over The Rainbow and a live album from the concert to aid the charity. More than 17 million pounds was raised for the victims.
Quotations:
"I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man's past, present or future property/possession. I do not belong to anyone but myself, and neither do you."
"You have to be thankful and I think being in this business is one of the most important things is to give back because there's no better feeling than knowing that your work is being appreciated by people."
"One of the most terrible feelings in the world is knowing that someone else doesn't like you. Especially when you don't know what you've done to deserve it."
"I never really expected to be taken seriously as an artist, and it's just been the ultimate, proudest achievement. I've dealt with a lot of people not knowing what to expect from me because of my age and my personality. People often mistake my kindness for weakness, and they didn't expect much from me, because at the end of the day, I'm just a nice Italian girl from Boca."
"A lot of times, women are labeled as a bitch or a diva for having a vision and being strong and using their voice, and it's just not the case. You can be strong and be friendly. [We] don't have to be just one thing, you know? Women can love to read a book and have sex."
"I've never looked at love as something that I need to complete me. I would like to be complete on my own first and fall in love with somebody who is also complete. You can still celebrate and be totally obsessed with each other, but I want to feel a hundred percent myself so that I can love that person better."
"I am not a piece of meat that a man gets to utilize for his pleasure. I'm an adult human being in a relationship with a man who treats me with love and respect."
Personality
Ariana loves hockey and used to attend every home game of her beloved Florida Panthers. One source reports hockey pucks have hit her on more than one occasion, which is only just a tad bit terrifying. When she was 8, Ariana sang the national anthem at one of those Panthers games.
Being accustomed to older music is something Ariana holds dearly. Since she grew up with her grandparents, she was not usually seen hearing pop music. Ariana liked listening to Four Seasons and Connie Francis, but she also cites Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston as her modern influences.
Quotes from others about the person
She’s one of my favorite artists right now. The thing I really like about her… anything I’ve ever asked her to be involved in, whether it’s Happy Hippie, or working with young homeless kids, she’s always there. So I can never say a bad thing about her because she’s always great." - Miley Cyrus
