The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is a Canadian singer, record producer, and actor. Tesfaye broke into the music scene with the 2011 mixtape House of Balloons. He is best known for his explicit songs about sex and drugs, many of which were autobiographical, and for his soaring falsetto and its singular tremolo.
Background
Ethnicity:
Tesfaye's parents were Ethiopian immigrants to Canada in the late 1980s.
Abel Tesfaye was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye. He is the only child of his parents who moved from Ethiopia to Canada in the 1980s.
He was brought up by his mother and maternal grandmother and doesn't remember his father, who left the family when he was one or two. His mother worked as a nurse and caterer to support the family, attending night school at the same time.
His first language is Amharic, which he learned from his grandmother. He also became fluent in French from the French-immersion class he attended till eighth grade.
Education
During his childhood, Tesfaye attended two schools, West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute. However, he got kicked out of one and dropped out of the other after six months. He then left home and started to live with two of his friends in a one-bedroom house at 65 Spencer Avenue.
Tesfaye describes his teenage years as the film "Kids without the AIDS." Tesfaye states he began smoking marijuana at age 11 and later moved on to harder drugs. Tesfaye claims he often shoplifted to supplement his use of ecstasy, oxycodone, xanax, cocaine, psilocybin, and ketamine.
Never shy about displaying his vocal talents, the Weeknd started recording his efforts while in high school.
When he was in grade 11, Abel quit school and left home, devoting himself to unbridled partying. Tesfaye eventually landed a job at American Apparel and at the same time began writing songs about drug use, casual sex, and alienation. He crossed paths with musician and producer Jeremy Rose, and they started working together. Their collaboration yielded three atmospheric songs - The Morning, Loft Music, and What You Need - with lyrics that were partly sung and partly rapped. The songs, credited to The Weeknd, were uploaded as audio files to the video-sharing Web site YouTube in late 2010; their popularity grew exponentially after they were posted to the blog of Canadian rapper Drake. He worked with Drake on his 2011 album, Take Care, which featured several tracks from House of Balloons, and landed a deal with Universal’s Republic Records.
The Weeknd’s earlier mixtapes were re-released as 2012’s Trilogy, which became a platinum-selling record for the young artist. Despite his growing popularity, he managed to hide himself from the public at large. The Weeknd refused interviews for a long time and chose to use images of women for his 2013 album, Kiss Land, rather than pictures of himself. Some of the mystique he built around himself was intentional, but it also reflected the shyness and insecurities that troubled him early in his career.
In addition to his own work, the Weeknd collaborated with other artists. He appeared on Wiz Khalifa’s Remember You in 2012 and worked with Rick Ross on his 2014 album, Mastermind. That same year, the Weeknd helped producer Max Martin with Ariana Grande’s hit Love Me Harder, and also scored success with Earned It, the first single released from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.
In 2015, the Weeknd continued his rise to the top with the No. 1 album Beauty Behind the Madness. His disco-pop infused single Can’t Feel My Face, which could be about a romantic experience or drug use, became for many the unofficial song of the summer, while his ballad The Hills also made quite an impression on music fans.
This well-received record helped the Weeknd rack up an impressive seven nominations for the 2016 Grammy Awards, winning for Best R&B Performance for Earned It and Best Urban Contemporary Album. He also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, also for Earned It.
In late November 2016, the Weeknd released his third album, Starboy. Along with guest appearances by Lana Del Rey, Future and Kendrick Lamar, the studio effort prominently featured French electronic duo Daft Punk, who collaborated on the chart-topping title track and its follow-up single, I Feel It Coming.
In October 2017, Tesfaye began marketing and promotion on a partnership with Marvel on Instagram. A week later, he attended New York Comic-Con and it was revealed that a Starboy comic book would be released on June 13, 2018, with the title character being a superhero modelled after himself.
The following year, the Weeknd reciprocated some of the guest contributions by appearing on albums for Lana Del Rey and Future. In early 2018, it was announced he would headline the two-weekend Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, along with Beyoncé and Eminem. Shortly afterward, the artist took home the Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy for Starboy.
In March of 2018, he dropped a surprise EP titled My Dear Melancholy. The release marked a return to the darker sound and aesthetic of Trilogy and featured contributions from Gesaffelstein, Skrillex, and Mike WiLL Made-It.
In January 2019, Tesfaye and Gesaffelstein released a new song, Lost in the Fire. Allegedly, the song was Abel's declaration of getting back together with his off-again-on-again girlfriend, Bella Hadid. Also, in 2019, alongside SZA and Travis Scott, The Weeknd presented song Power Is Power, a single from the Game of Thrones companion soundtrack, For the Throne.
On August 30, 2019, during the Telluride Film Festival, Tesfaye made his debut cinematic appearance on the world premiere of the film Uncut Gems.
In November 2019, The Weekend released two new singles, Blinding Lights and Heartless. Blinding Lights also became a soundtrack for Mercedes-Benz commercial on German television.
The Weeknd isn’t big into religion anymore but growing up in a suburb of Toronto he was raised as an Oriental Orthodox Christian. When he was younger, The Weeknd’s grandmother would take him to an Ethiopian Orthodox church to attend services.
Politics
In May 2016 The Weeknd canceled an appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show when he learned that Donald Trump would also be a guest on that particular show.
Views
The Weeknd is also a philanthropist. He has provided monetary support to various causes including a $250,000 donation to the Black Lives Matter movement.
In June 2017, Tesfaye donated $100,000 to the Suubi Health Center, a maternity and children's medical facility in Budondo, Uganda. Tesfaye was inspired to support the center after learning of his friend French Montana's work with Global Citizen and Mama Hope to help raise awareness for Suubi and the people of Uganda.
Quotations:
"Nothing is stopping me from doing what I love to do."
"Environment is very important to me. Sometimes I have to perform during the day for festivals, and my music does not work in the daytime. It is nighttime music."
"I usually don't like to 'spoon feed' my audience, because I grew up idolizing storytellers who tell stories using symbolism, so it was in my nature to do the same."
"The last thing you want is to not be recognized for all of the hard work you put in."
Personality
At the age of 17, Tesfaye dropped out of high school and persuaded his best friend, La Mar Taylor, to join him. In an interview with The New York Times magazine, he says he moved into a one-bedroom with Taylor and another friend and got high at night on many occasions. MDMA, Xanax, cocaine, mushrooms, and ketamine were their drugs of choice.
The Weeknd has expressed hopes to be as influential as Michael Jackson someday. His obsession also stems from being Ethiopian as Jackson is somewhat of a national icon in Ethiopia because of the song We Are the World. He also did a cover of Jackson's Dirty Diana.
Even though he is a famous musician, The Weeknd hates doing things that traditional musicians are required to do, like taking pictures. He apparently was very insecure and hated how he looked, and so he would either avoid taking pictures completely, or ask to be cropped out of any ones that were accidentally taken of him.
The Weeknd grew up being inspired by Ethiopian artists like Aster Aweke and Mulatu Astatke. His family would play the music around him. He also grew up listening to a variety of music genres, including soul, quiet storm, hip hop, funk, indie rock, and post-punk. Drake, Nick Jonas, Tove Lo have cited him as a musical influence. The world's wealthiest DJ Calvin Harris and Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar are also both confirmed fans of the Weeknd.
According to him, the Joker is his favorite villain of all time. He likes the Joker because, “…You don’t know his past, you just know what his plans are.”

Connections
The Weeknd has been in a relationship with runway model Bella Hadid since early 2015. She also appeared in his music video In the Night. However, they reportedly broke up in late 2016 due to conflicting schedules.
In January 2017, The Weeknd reportedly started dating Selena Gomez and they moved in together temporarily in September 2017 in Greenwich Village, New York. They broke up in October 2017. The Weeknd released My Dear Melancholy, in March 2018, which, according to media outlets, referenced Gomez in several songs.
By May 2018, Tesfaye and Hadid began dating again, before splitting again in 2019.
