Arthur Austin Goldsmith was born on July 7, 1926 in Merrimack, Massachusetts, United States.
Arthur Goldsmith studied at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, in 1947-1948, then completed his Bachelor of Science in 1951 at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He earned a Master of Science in 1972 from Fairfield University Graduate School of Communications, Fairfield, Connecticut.
Arthur Goldsmith has been editorial director of Popular Photography and Camera Arts magazines since 1972. Previously he was president and director of the Famous Photographers School (1961-1972), picture editor of This Week (1960-1961) and executive editor of Popular Photography (1951-1960).
Arthur Goldsmith has written numerous magazine articles on practical, social and aesthetic aspects of photography and has been the editor of several Famous Photographers School textbooks.
