Arthur Hughes was born on January 27, 1832 London, United Kingdom. He was the son of Edward and Amy Hughes.
Arthur Foord Hughes entered Archbishop Tennison's Grammar School in about 1838, but showed such precocious talent in drawing that he quickly progressed to a professional training in fine art. He entered the Royal Academy at the age of fifteen and shortly afterwards came into contact with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites. This encounter was a crucial event in the formation of Hughes's style.
In 1849 Arthur Hughes exhibited his first picture, Musidora, at the Royal Academy. He converted to Pre-Raphaelitism in 1850 after reading the Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ. In the same year, he met William Holman Hunt, D.G. Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown. He exhibited his first Pre-Raphaelite painting, Ophelia, in 1852, and met Millais that year.
He produced some of his best-known Pre-Raphaelite works during the 1850s, including "April Love" and "The Long Engagement". From about 1852 to 1858 he shared a studio with the sculptor Alexander Munro.
In 1855 he also began a successful career as an illustrator, becoming associated particularly with the works of Thomas Hughes, George Macdonald and Christina Rossetti. He devoted much of the subsequent two decades to illustrating.
Hughes moved from London in 1858 and in 1862 made a short visit to Italy. He exhibited for the last time at the Royal Academy in 1908.

Arthur Hughes was a truly gentle and modest man. Very little is known about his private life or his views on art, but he was well loved by all the Pre-Raphaelites and maintained contact with many of them his whole life.
In 1855 Hughes married Tryphena Foord. She was a model for his painting "April Love". They had six children.
