In his early years, Arthur studied at a one-room school. During the period from 1906 till 1908, he attended Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (present-day Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University), where he studied electrical engineering.
Arthur penned several works, including "Shen of the Sea: A Book for Children" (1925), "The Wind That Wouldn't Blow: Stories of the Merry Middle Kingdom for Children, and Myself" (1927), "Clarke County, 1836-1936" (1936) and "Treasures Long Hidden: Old Tales and New Tales of the East" (1941).
Besides his work as an author, Chrisman also serves as a school teacher for two years, as well as a farmer, drafter, movie extra and lecturer.
In his later years, Arthur became reclusive and seldom left his one-room cabin in Shirley, Arkansas, where he settled down in about 1943. On February 21, 1953, his body was found by two local men after Chrisman missed one of his regular grocery-buying trips to Clinton.
