(The Shapiros' pioneering study of Gilles de la Tourette s...)
The Shapiros' pioneering study of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, first published in 1978, has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the authors' vastly expanded clinical experience and the enormous growth of research on this disorder. In this Second Edition, the Shapiros, in collaboration with two colleagues from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, analyze data from more than 1,600 patients they have treated. Extensive clinical data are presented to support the authors' conclusion that Tourette syndrome is not intrinsically associated with any psychopathology. In addition, the authors establish that there are no known precipitants of Tourette syndrome, that stimulants do not cause or permanently exacerbate tics, and that the proper treatment of Tourette syndrome and tic disorders is suppression of tics with drugs.
