In 1947 Artur graduated from the Philological Faculty of the Moscow City Pedagogical Institute of Potemkin, in 1950 he also defended his thesis concerning the psychological views of A. Radishchev.
Artur Petrovsky taught for two years at the Vologda Pedagogical Institute. Returning to work at MGPI, he continued his research in the field of the history of psychology and in 1965 defended his doctoral dissertation on the history of Soviet psychology. From 1965 to 1971 Artur Petrovsky headed the Department of Psychology of Moscow State Pedagogical University. From 1972 to 1991 he was the head of the psychology laboratory of the personality of the Psychological Institute of the Russian Academy of Education. From 1968 to 1976 - Academician-Secretary of the Department of Psychology and Age Psychology, in 1976-1979 - Vice-President of the APN USSR (now Russian Academy of Education). In 1991 Artur Petrovsky was appointed the president-organizer of the Russian Academy of Education, from 1992 to 1997 he was its president.
A Petrovsky formulated an original concept that describes the dynamics of the development of social groups - the theory of the activity mediation of interpersonal relations. According to this theory, the relations forming in the group have a multi-layered character. Another area of A.V. Petrovsky's research is the study of personality development processes. In his opinion, the development of personality can be described as the process of entering into society, as a constant change of various communities into which it enters and each of such occurrences is a stage on the path of its development.
In 1968 Artur Petrovsky was elected as a corresponding member of the APN USSR (now Russian Academy of Education). Since 1971 - he was a full member of the APN USSR.
