Ashley Olsen is an American fashion designer, businesswoman, author, and former actress. Ashley Olsen made her TV debut on the sitcom Full House with her younger twin sister, Mary-Kate. The show was a tremendous hit, and the Olsen twins grew up in front of the American viewing public. After the twin duo rose to fame, they managed to build their own business empire and went on to become one of the wealthiest self-made millionaires in America.
Background
Ethnicity:
Ashley Olsen has Norwegian, English, German, 1/8th Italian, and distant French ancestry.
Ashley Olsen was born on June 13, 1986, in Sherman Oaks, California, the United States, to a mortgage banker, David Olsen, and a manager, Jarnie Olsen. She has a twin sister named Mary-Kate who was born two minutes after her. She also has an elder brother named Trent Olsen and a younger sister named Elizabeth Olsen. Elizabeth also went on to become an actress. Ashley's parents divorced in 1996. She has two younger half-siblings, Taylor and Jake, from their father's second marriage.
Education
In 2004, Ashley Olsen graduated from the Campbell Hall School, Studio City, California, the United States. She attended the New York University for a brief period but dropped out later.
Unlike most teen actors and actresses who get their start in commercials before graduating to films and television, the Olsen twins started their career on the classic sitcom Full House. The twins hadn't even reached their first birthday when their mother Jarnette sent in photos of the two for the role of infant Michelle Tanner on Full House. Although she wasn't expecting a callback, the casting agent got in touch and the twins got the role. The series ran for eight years, during which the Olsen twins' career took off.
During the first two years on the air, Full House did not even make it into the Top 30 list of most-watched television shows. By the 1989-1990 season, however, it did and climbed to the No. 14 spot the next year. It peaked at No. 7 by the end of the 1991-1992 season. Olsen's cuteness factor seemed to boost the show's popularity, but their parents were still show-business novices.
The twins were still earning Screen Actors' Guild "scale," or minimum wages, which amounted to about $4,000 per episode. Reportedly, parents of other children who were on the show suggested they negotiate for a higher fee. Dave and Jarnette found an entertainment lawyer, Robert Thorne, who had cut deals for pop superstar Prince, and he got them a higher rate.
Thorne wound up becoming the Olsen's agent, and later their business manager. He suggested they branch out with a pop record, Brother for Sale, which was released in 1992. A television movie, To Grandmother's House We Go, was also released in 1992. It was an adventure yarn set during the Christmas holidays. As the twins' popularity and star-potential increased, Thorne created the Dualstar Entertainment Group in 1993 to manage their careers.
To Grandmother's House was followed by a slew of other films, nearly four dozen in all, that went directly to video as planned. Nearly all of them caught on with the legions of young girls who were the Olsens' most devoted fan base, the four-to-ten-year-old set. Then their fan base began to grow up along with them, and in some cases, the later movies like Passport to Paris and Our Lips Are Sealed were among the top-selling titles that year on the kids' video charts.
By the age of 12, the girls had starred in home videos, feature films, multi-media entertainment, and another TV series, Two of a Kind. Under the name Dualstar Entertainment, they produced several straight-to-video movies, a line of musical detective videos entitled The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, and the enormously successful You're Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley's party tapes.
They also introduced a series of companion books to accompany the videos. In 1993, Our First Video went to the top of the Billboard video music chart and was followed shortly by I Am The Cute One and Brother for Sale. The twins made their big-screen debut in 1995 in It Takes Two.
In addition to acting, the Olsens have become a huge force in girl marketing. Products bearing their names, including computer games, dolls, and an enormously popular clothing line for Wal-Mart, are estimated to generate about $1 billion in retail sales alone per year.
Meanwhile, their multimedia empire continued to expand. Offers came pouring in when executives of other companies began to realize that nearly anything that had their name and image would sell, and usually sell very well. A series of Olsen twins adventure novels, published by Scholastic, sold in the millions, and they also branched out into a clothing line, introduced at Wal-Mart in 2001. When Mattel began selling a line of Mary-Kate and Ashley dolls, only the company's flagship product, Barbie, outsold them.
The Olsens had become immensely rich even before they entered their teens. At the age of ten, they were the youngest millionaires in America whose wealth had not been inherited. They began to receive executive-producer credit on their films, and usually worked about five months of the year. The rest was spent at a private school in the Los Angeles area. In press interviews, they stressed that they led average lives and liked to take part in the same activities - sleepovers, horseback riding, dance classes - as their friends and fans.
Mary-Kate and Ashley announced plans to attend New York University in the fall of 2004. That same year, they released their second feature film, New York Minute, and became full owners of Dualstar after they bought the minority shares of the company. The next year, the sisters began appearing together in the Badgley Mischka ad campaign.
They also made their foray into the world of high-end fashion by launching a line of their own called The Row. In 2007, they announced another line of more contemporary clothing, Elizabeth and James, which is named after their sister and brother. They are also known for their more affordable lines StyleMint and Olsenboye.
In October 2008, the twins released the book Influence, a work introducing readers to the artists and designers who have influenced the Olsens over the last decade. Released through a division of the Penguin Young Readers Group, the work features figures such as Christian Louboutin, Lauren Hutton, and Bob Colacello. It became an instant best-seller, and the twins launched a promotional tour for the book.
Nowadays, Ashley is focused on being a fashion designer and stays out of the spotlight. She is not on social media platforms, rarely appears in public, or gives interviews. In 2018, Ashley and Mary-Kate agreed to a rare joint interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, in which they discussed the strength of their bond as twin sisters and their working relationship. Ashley also suggested that she was considering the big step of moving to Los Angeles, after years of living close to Mary-Kate in New York City.
