(Riverdale gives a subversive take on small-town life. Riv...)
Riverdale gives a subversive take on small-town life. Riverdale follows all-American teen Archie Andrews, budding writer Jughead Jones, focused singer Josie McCoy, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and new student, Veronica Lodge.
Cole Sprouse is an American actor, best known for playing Cody Martin in the Disney sitcom The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and its spinoff The Suite Life on Deck, in which he was seen alongside his twin brother Dylan Sprouse. Cole Sprouse became a successful American child star; as an adult, he's embraced photography and made the choice to return to acting with the television series Riverdale.
Background
Ethnicity:
Cole Sprouse’s ancestry includes English, Scottish, Danish, and German.
Cole Sprouse was born on April 4, 1992, in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, to American parents Matthew Sprouse and Melanie Wright, a quarter of an hour after his brother Dylan. The twins' parents were English teachers in Italy at the time. Although he was born in Italy, he is not of Italian descent. Cole's American parents moved back to their native California four months after Dylan and Cole were born. Cole was named after jazz singer and pianist Nat King Cole.
Cole’s maternal grandmother Jonine Booth Wright was an actress and a drama teacher. She encouraged her grandsons and convinced Cole’s parents to let their sons try acting.
Education
Cole was tutored on the sets as he was unable to attend school regularly due to his filming schedules. During his last year at school, Cole took an advanced placement in psychology and government. In June 2010, Cole graduated from Laurel Springs High School. Sprouse began attending New York University in 2011, after deferring one year.
Initially interested in studying film and television production, he decided to enroll instead in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, pursuing the humanities and in particular archaeology. Dylan went to the same school; Sprouse's future Riverdale co-star Camila Mendes was a fellow student as well. Sprouse and his brother graduated in May 2015; as a prank, they switched places to get their diplomas.
In 1993, when they were just eight months old, Cole and his brother appeared in a diaper commercial. Following the suggestion of their grandmother, an actress and drama teacher, the Sprouse brothers soon embarked upon what turned out to be a very successful acting career (they even landed the first commercial they auditioned for). In an audio post on his Tumblr page, he revealed that it wasn’t ever his dream, saying, “My brother and I were put into acting by our mother because we needed the money.” He elaborated, “It was never my passion, to be honest, if she never thrust me into it I probably never would have thought of it as a career choice for myself." Though he came to appreciate many of the opportunities the career presented him with.
They first appeared in commercials and then as Patrick Kelly on the series Grace Under Fire from 1993 to 1998. Their first big role was at age six, playing Julian in Big Daddy alongside Adam Sandler in 1999. In 2000, Sprouse alone was cast as Ben, the son of David Schwimmer's character of Ross on Friends (working on set, Sprouse developed a crush on Jennifer Aniston). The brothers shared all small roles in the 2000s.
Cole continued acting in various projects both on his own and with Dylan until 2005 when they landed the role that would make them household names amongst youngsters. What started a test pilot for Disney turned into a six-year-long project for Cole and his brother with Disney Channel. He starred as Cody Martin, the bookish nerd counter to his prankster, class clown brother Zack in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (2005-2008). Disney series generally run for three years, so when that series came to an end, they were cast on The Suite Life on Deck, which followed the twin brothers as they went to school on a cruise ship. They were also kept busy with a Suite Life TV movie and multiple crossover episodes between other shows airing on Disney Channel, including Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, I'm in the Band and That’s So Raven.
During their Suite Life success, Sprouse and his brother were reportedly earning a combined $40,000 per episode. They also worked with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's entertainment company to launch a magazine, deodorant, and other products. However, when they were 18 a dispute about creative control made Sprouse and Dylan decide to walk away from stardom and the Disney Channel.
After ending his role at Disney, Cole wanted to take time out of the spotlight and made the decision to have a more normal life. Sprouse credits social media with facilitating his stepping back into the spotlight, telling People magazine in 2017, "I anticipated we would go to college and then we would fade out, that was kind of what we wanted at the time, but social media hung onto my brother and I, and thankfully fans hung onto my brother and I, and I think it's one of the reasons that this reemergence can come back with a little more strength, and I'm very thankful for that."
Cole was trying to decide between pursuing graduate school or returning to acting when he was working in an archeology lab. His agent sent him the script for a new series called Riverdale and he chose to audition during the pilot week while still working at the lab. He landed the role of Jughead on the show, which is loosely based on characters from the Archie comics. Though he'd initially been up for Archie, Sprouse was drawn to the character of Jughead Jones - an outsider who serves as the show's narrator - and asked to audition for that part.
Sprouse was cast as Jughead but had to dye his blonde hair black for the role (he's noted this makes it easier for people to distinguish him from his twin). Other stars on the successful series include KJ Apa as Archie and Camila Mendes as Veronica.
In 2019, Sprouse co-starred with Haley Lu Richardson in Five Feet Apart, the two playing cystic fibrosis patients who develop feelings for one another. The romantic drama was a commercial success but drew mixed reviews, with some in the cystic fibrosis community criticizing the trivialization of a series illness.
Sprouse is a talented photographer and has credited photography by offering a positive outlet when he was experiencing depression. He's photographed magazine covers and fashion shoots, with his work appearing in publications like The Sunday Times and L’Uomo Vogue. The subjects he's photographed include model Kendall Jenner, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner and singer Sam Smith.
Talking about his passion for photography with The Sunday Times in 2017, Sprouse said, "I've been dabbling with the notion that if and when photography takes a more prevalent role in my life, I will likely never return to acting."

Religion
Cole hasn’t used his fame to advocate for a particular religion or whether he has a chosen faith or not.
Publicizing a photoshoot that he did for photographer Alex Hainer, Sprouse remarked, “I’m not religious but if you cross me I’ll cross you.”
Politics
Cole seems to not like the present direction of the Republican party. In a December 15, 2015 tweet he told his fanbase: "Don't encourage poor politics by watching the #GOPDebate, the "grand old party" is now nothing but the inbred child of a once proper gene."
He has also made multiple comments on Twitter against the decisions made by President Trump, such as this January 29, 2017 tweet: “Your brand is not in jeopardy by public opposition to Trump. Your nation is in jeopardy without it.”
That said, he isn’t afraid to use current politics to be a goofball either. In April 2017, he retweeted a tweet by President Donald Trump to his followers, asking both then and the POTUS how many retweets Cole needed to get Trump to take him to prom.
Views
In 2012, Dylan and Cole were officially appointed as the International Ambassadors of the Koyamada Foundation. They traveled to Japan with Shin Koyamada to empower the youth of Japan to better themselves and rebuild Japan as a society as well as to deepen the friendly relations and brotherhood between the youth of Japan and America in August 2013.
Cole has been direct on the issue of racism. He has used his Tumblr to post his thoughts on the issue. “Racism has no pre-requisites. It does not need to come from a position of power,” Cole said in one such Tumblr post. “Racism is hate. Don’t let your past stereotypes about any one person become a lens in which you judge that person’s worth, and that can be an individual or a group.”
Quotations:
"Acting requires a great amount of empathy for real, lived human experiences. I hadn't lived any real human experiences outside of home-school and being in a sound stage, and there was really no other option. I couldn't continue to live in a bubble and hope to be an empathetic actor. It doesn't work."
"I think regardless of success, all those kids were dealing with a similar dilemma when it came to their maturity and their publicity and fame, and how they were viewed in the public eye. Some people choose sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll to come to terms with it. Some people find religion. [College] seemed like the most productive way to prove to people we were coming into ourselves. I was finding out my identity and growing by going to an institution where I could evolve and become more adept at understanding why I was thinking certain things, and how society viewed me."
Personality
Cole is pretty active on social media - one of his Instagram account is called @Camera_Duels. It's filled with photos of fans trying to take sneaky pictures of him paired with lengthy and humorous captions describing the situation.
In 2017 he told Elle magazine he made the account after noticing too many people trying to sneak photos of him.: "I would always be dissatisfied that people wouldn't just ask, because I always say yes. So @camera_duels was born. It was a way of coping or trying to turn it around in my favor and give me more agency in a situation," he told the publication.
Cole has recently spoken out about his struggles with mental illness. He claims that his interest in photography started from his battle with depression, as a way of coping and finding an outlet for the sadness. He is a passionate and emotive photographer, and he claims that his journey to grapple with his own mental health contributed to his exploration of the art form.
Sprouse is a fan of comics and worked at the Los Angeles comic store Meltdown. Video games is another one of his passions. He is also a big fan of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Cole also enjoys writing and keeping a personal journal. This hobby was incorporated in the show Riverdale for his on-screen character Jughead Jones.

Connections
Sprouse and Lili Reinhart co-star on Riverdale; their characters, Jughead and Betty, are an onscreen couple. A few months after the show's 2017 launch, Sprouse and Reinhart's interactions in public and on social media led to rumors they were dating. However, the two were circumspect about publicly confirming a romance, with Sprouse admitting he wanted to maintain a private life.
In January 2018, Sprouse and Reinhart were seen together in Hawaii. In April, they were spotted kissing in Paris, and later that month Sprouse's social media revealed the two were vacationing in Mexico. The couple then attended the May 2018 Met Gala together.
In July 2019, it was confirmed that Sprouse and Reinhart had split after two years of dating, but got back together again.
