Ambikagiri Raichoudhury was an Indian Assamese poet, lyricist, playwright, journalist, editor, and freedom fighter known as Assam Kesari, or the Lion of Assam. His nationalist poetry and journalism helped shape modern Assamese public culture. His poetry collection Bedanar Ulka received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Assamese in 1966.
Background
Ambikagiri Raichoudhury was born on December 18, 1885, in the Raipara area of Barpeta, Assam, to Krishnaram Raichoudhury and Devaki Devi. He grew up in a prominent Barpeta family associated with the cultural environment of Assam and received his early schooling locally.
His formative years coincided with the growth of anti-colonial political activity and the development of modern Assamese print culture. He entered public activism while still young, and his involvement in the independence movement interrupted his formal education. He later became known for combining literary work with political advocacy, social reform, and cultural organization.
Education
Raichoudhury received his early education in Barpeta and later studied in Guwahati, reaching approximately the eighth standard at a high English school. His formal education did not continue after he became involved in anti-colonial activism.
His intellectual development instead took place through Assamese literary culture, journalism, public speaking, music, and political work. The educational environment of early twentieth-century Assam was closely connected with the expansion of English schooling and vernacular print culture, both of which provided new channels for political and cultural debate.
Career
Raichoudhury entered public life through literary, cultural, and nationalist activity. He wrote poetry, songs, plays, essays, and other prose in Assamese, and his early writing joined romantic and mystical themes with an increasingly forceful concern for freedom and social justice.
During the independence movement he used journalism, public speaking, and patriotic writing to encourage opposition to British rule. He was imprisoned twice for political activity, including participation in the Non-Cooperation Movement. His nationalist publications included Chetana, founded and edited in Guwahati from 1919, and Deka Asom, through which he promoted Assamese cultural consciousness and political awakening.
Raichoudhury also contributed to institutional and cultural development in Assam. He was associated with the founding of the Asom Sangrakshini Sabha, the Asom Jatiyo Mahasabha, and the Gauhati Sangeet Vidyalay. His work as a singer and cultural organizer complemented his literary activity, while his speeches and editorials addressed the preservation of Assamese language, society, and identity.
In 1950 he presided over the annual session of the Asam Sahitya Sabha at Margherita. The Sabha, founded in 1917, became one of the principal institutions for the promotion of Assamese language and literature. Raichoudhury's later literary career included poetry collections, plays, essays, and prose works, culminating in recognition for Bedanar Ulka, which received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Assamese in 1966.
Raichoudhury became one of the leading Assamese voices of India's independence movement, using poetry, journalism, speeches, and patriotic songs to encourage political awakening and opposition to colonial rule.
He helped establish literary, nationalist, and cultural organizations including the Asom Sangrakshini Sabha, the Asom Jatiyo Mahasabha, and the Gauhati Sangeet Vidyalay.
He presided over the 1950 annual session of the Asam Sahitya Sabha at Margherita, one of the major institutional gatherings of Assamese literary life.
His poetry and prose addressed Assamese cultural preservation, freedom, social inequality, communalism, injustice, and resistance to oppressive customs.

Politics
Ambikagiri Raichoudhury was a leading participant in India's independence movement and a powerful advocate of Assamese national and cultural interests. His political thought combined opposition to British rule with concern for the preservation of Assamese language, land, and collective identity.
He used poetry, journalism, public speaking, and organizational work to encourage political awakening. His later activism also addressed social inequality, communalism, injustice, oppressive customs, and what he regarded as threats to Assamese society. His nationalism was expressed through both the wider Indian freedom struggle and a strong regional commitment to Assam.
Views
Raichoudhury's poetry joined patriotism with mystical and humanistic reflection. His early poems treated love, beauty, nature, and spiritual experience, while his later writing emphasized freedom, dignity, social justice, and resistance to oppression.
His work criticized caste prejudice, inequality, hatred, injustice, empty display, selfishness, and harmful social customs. The movement from romantic and mystical poetry toward revolutionary nationalism did not eliminate his interest in spirituality; instead, moral and spiritual aspiration remained connected with his vision of a just society.
Membership
Raichoudhury participated in the Asam Sahitya Sabha, the major literary organization devoted to the development and promotion of Assamese language and literature. His documented role as president of its 1950 annual session placed him among the leading literary figures directing Assamese cultural activity in the post-independence period.
