V. Madhusoodanan Nair is an Indian Malayalam poet, writer, educator, and lyricist known for popularizing poetry through public recitation. His best-known collection, Naranathu Bhranthan, appeared in 1992, and his literary career includes poetry, criticism, teaching, film lyrics, and major national and regional awards.
Background
V. Madhusoodanan Nair was born on February 25, 1949, at Aruviyodu, a hamlet near the Neyyar River and Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. His father, K. Velayudhan Pillai, was a reciter of Thottam Pattu, a ritual song tradition of Kerala, and this oral environment formed an early background to Nair's later interest in poetry and recitation.
He began writing poetry while he was still at school and started publishing poems during the 1980s. His literary identity developed within the Malayalam cultural sphere of Kerala, where poetry, oral performance, music, and public literary programs have remained closely connected.
Education
Nair studied Malayalam literature at University College Thiruvananthapuram and completed a Master of Arts degree. University College is one of Thiruvananthapuram's historic institutions of higher education and has long contributed to the study of languages, literature, and the humanities in Kerala.
His education also included translation training through the State Institute of Languages and refresher courses at the Academic Staff College in Thiruvananthapuram. His academic preparation supported later work as a Malayalam teacher, literary critic, and interpreter of poetry.
Career
After completing his master's degree, Nair briefly worked in journalism before entering higher education. His early media work connected him with Malayalam journalism and broadcasting, while his later academic career placed him in the institutional study and teaching of Malayalam literature.
Nair joined St. Xavier's College, Thiruvananthapuram, in 1979 and eventually became Professor and Head of its Department of Malayalam. The college, founded as a Catholic higher-education institution and later expanded into undergraduate teaching in Malayalam and mass communication, provided the setting for his long academic career. He retired from the college after serving as a senior member of the Malayalam faculty.
His poetry became widely known through recitation, which brought literary works to audiences beyond conventional print readership. Naranathu Bhranthan, first published in 1992, became his most celebrated collection, followed by works including Bharatheeyam, Gandhi, Agasthyahridayam, Punyapuranam Ramakatha, Vaakku, Ganga, and Achan Piranna Veedu.
Nair also wrote and performed lyrics for Malayalam films and contributed lyrics to releases associated with Tharangini and Manorama Music. His work extended across poetry, literary criticism, language, translation, public recitation, and music, while his later years have been devoted primarily to literary activity.
Achievements
Nair's poetry collection Naranathu Bhranthan, first published in 1992, became his best-known literary work and was repeatedly reprinted, helping establish his reputation as a major popular voice in Malayalam poetry.
Through public recitation, recordings, and literary programs, Nair contributed to the wider popularization of Malayalam poetry among audiences beyond the conventional literary readership.
He helped promote Malayalam language and cultural study through the Malayalam Pallikkoodam initiative and related public educational activities.
