Background
Atsushi Iso was born in 1827. He was the son of Shichiroemon Iso, and a retainer of the Akizuki clan.

Atsushi Iso studied under Totsuan Ohashi and Tenzan Fujimori in Edo.
Career
Later returned home to become a teacher at his clan’s school. After the Meiji Restoration (1868) Atsushi Iso was appointed professor at Daigaku Nanko (Predecessor of Tokyo University). Later founded a private school in Kumamoto. He was involved in the Keishinto Affair (Teppei Onofs rebellion), and after being defeated committed suicide.
