This brief grammar is intended primarily for college-classes and such students generally as would begin reading Spanish, without waste of time, on the basis of an accurate knowledge of the essentials of its grammar. It contains, therefore, a methodical survey of Spanish Pronunciation and Accidence (with exercises), Syntax and Versification. For self-evident reasons, the pronunciation of Spanish is explained, in the usual way, by the aid of English key-words, instead of phonetic rules. Kindred pronoun-groups are classified with reference to their real scientific distinction into tonic and atonic. Auxiliary verbs are classified and described with the irregular verbs, where they belong, and the so-called "compound"(i.e. periphrastic) conjugations are explained in a few brief paragraphs. To begin with what is very irregular in order to be able to devote pages to what is a simple syntactical combination involves needless confusion and loss of time, especially in Spanish, with its periphrastic active, passive, and progressive conjugations, each having two or more auxiliaries. Especial care has been taken to make the chapter on verb-inflection both full and simple. It is hoped that the method of classification here adopted, reducing the number of irregular verbs to about thirty by conjugating all other verbs according to eight models (three leading, as usual, and five subordinate), will materially simplify a difficult and important topic. August Hjalmar Edgren was born in Vermland, Sweden, the son of Axel and Mathilda Edgren.
He was graduated from the Lyceum of Stockholm in 1858, and from the Swedish Royal Military Academy in 1860.
On his return home in 1869 he was promoted first adjutant, but the experience of the two previous years had so whetted his natural appetite for study that he resigned his commission in 1870, returned to the United States, and entered Cornell University, where he received the bachelor’s degree in 1871.
After a year on the staff of the Riverview-on-the- Hudson Military Academy at Poughkeepsie, he entered Yale College from which he received the degree of Ph. D. in 1874.
His interest in the issues of the American Civil War led him to emigrate to the United States and enlist in the 99th Regiment, New York Infantry, which was incorporated in the Army of the Potomac.
He participated in many battles and was promoted to a first lieutenancy for “bravery in action” in 1863 ; he was then detailed as staff engineer in charge of the construction of fortifications at Yorktown.
He returned to his native land in 1863, and remained a lieutenant in the Swedish army until 1870.
By this time the life of the soldier had begun to pall upon him.
He had meanwhile become instructor in the Sheffield Scientific School in 1873, and continued there until 1880, when he returned to Sweden to become privat-docent in Sanskrit in the University of Lund.
From 1885 to 1891 he was again in the United States, as professor of modern languages at the University of Nebraska.
To his teaching duties were added, in 1896, the functions of dean of the Graduate School.
He published a long series of monographs and articles on Sanskrit philology and literature, Germanic and Romance languages, and comparative philology, written in Swedish, German, French, and Latin; he edited German, French, and Italian dictionaries, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Sanskrit grammars, and French school texts. Through translation and criticism he did much to introduce Sanskrit masterpieces and English and American literature to the Swedish people, and to interpret to them American life and educational institutions. He also published two volumes of his own poems.
