Norfleet received a BA from Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania (1947), and an MA and PhD from Harvard University/ Radcliffe, Cambridge, Massachusetts (1950, 1951).
She has been a lecturer at Harvard since 1960, first in social sciences (until 1970) and then in visual and environmental studies. She was also curator of photography at Harvard's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (since 1972) and the organizer and director of Harvard's Photography Archive (since 1975). She received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant in 1975-77 and a Massachusetts Council of the Arts and Humanities grant in 1972. She curates shows for the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts.
Norfleet belongs to the American Psychological Association and to American Studies.
