(Malay-language book on entrepreneurship and business, pub...)
Malay-language book on entrepreneurship and business, published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in Kuala Lumpur. The volume is listed in library catalogues as volume 1 of 307 pages.
Barjoyai Bin Bardai is a Malaysian accounting educator, economist, and taxation scholar. He taught at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1976, became a professor of accounting and taxation, and later worked in universities, consulting, and public economic commentary. His research and books address Malaysian taxation, entrepreneurship, and Islamic finance.
Background
Barjoyai Bin Bardai was born on November 20, 1952, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Bin Hassan Bardai and Sumanah (Hjyusuf) Bardai. He grew up in the years before the Federation of Malaya gained independence in 1957, when the territory remained under British administration. Kuala Lumpur had served as an administrative center of the Malay states since the late nineteenth century and became the national capital at independence.
His later academic path moved from economics and accounting at the University of Malaya to advanced study in Britain and the United States. That sequence of study, which combined accounting, industrial administration, and taxation, shaped the professional fields in which he later worked and wrote.
Education
He received a Bachelor in Economics, with accounting as his field, from the University of Malaya in 1975, and he completed a Professional Diploma in Accounting at the same university in 1979. The University of Malaya was founded in 1949 and is Malaysia's oldest university. It moved its main campus to Kuala Lumpur in 1959, and its economics and accounting programs provided the training base for many of the country's public and professional accountants.
He earned a Master of Science in Industrial Administration from the Aston Business School in 1977. Aston University in Birmingham, England, grew out of a technical college and received its university charter in 1966. Its business school emphasized management and industrial administration, the field of his master's degree.
He completed a Diploma in International Taxation at Harvard University in 1980, having received a Bank of Tokyo scholarship in 1979 for the study. Harvard, founded in 1636, is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The taxation diploma was offered through Harvard Law School, which dates to 1817 and is among the oldest law schools in the country.
He received a Doctor of Philosophy in taxation from University College London, part of the University of London, in 1990. Founded in 1826, University College London was the first English university to admit students regardless of religious affiliation. His doctoral years overlapped with a fellowship from the Association of Commonwealth Universities, held in London from 1988 to 1991.
His first documented position was in the public sector. In 1975 he served as an assistant secretary in the Economics Planning Unit of the Malaysian Finance Department in Kuala Lumpur. The Economic Planning Unit was the federal government's economic planning agency, responsible for national development planning. In the same year he worked briefly as an audit assistant at Turquand Young & Company, an accounting practice of British origin that later became part of the Ernst & Young network.
In 1976 he joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as a tutor in accounting, and he became a lecturer in 1977. The university had been established in 1970 as Malaysia's second national university. From 1981 he served as associate professor and deputy dean of the faculty of business management, and he later held the posts of head of department, dean of the business school from 1986 to 1988, and professor of accounting and taxation from 1994.
During the early 1980s and late 1980s he also worked in the private sector and in research. He was general manager of Compuform Sdn. Bhd., a Malaysian private limited company, and a director of Malaysian Carbonless Industries from 1984 to 1989. The carbonless industry produced business forms that copy without carbon paper. From 1985 to 1988 he was a research associate at the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research.
From 2009 he held finance and accounting roles in government-linked organizations. He served PETRONAS, the national oil and gas company, in various finance and accounting functions, and he worked as an executive at Malaysia Industrial Development Finance, a government-linked finance company. Other corporate positions listed in his professional biography include president of Telekom Advanced System Corporation, chairman of Eletel Incorporated in Toronto, executive chairman of Selangor Medical Centre, and a director of Kumpulan Hartanah Selangor Berhad, a Selangor property group.
In his later career he taught and held professorial posts at several private universities. He was appointed a professor at Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) in Kuala Lumpur and served as program director of its MBA in Global Islamic Finance. He also held the positions of provost and dean of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies at Malaysia University of Science and Technology in Petaling Jaya, and professor of accounting and taxation at Al-Madinah International University in Shah Alam. Later UNIRAZAK described him as an emeritus professor.
He also held external and examining roles. He served as external examiner in information technology management at Universiti Sains Malaysia, a public university in Penang founded in 1969, and as chief examiner in tax planning for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a UK-based international accountancy body. He has commented publicly on economic policy in Malaysian media, including on the economy of Kuala Lumpur in 2021 and on tax reforms in the 2027 budget.

His published and public work emphasizes entrepreneurship, business ethics, and Islamic finance. He has argued that the government should encourage young people and workers to enter business, and his 1999 paper on corporate governance adopts an Islamic perspective on the responsibilities of chief executives and boards of directors. His research on waqf, an Islamic endowment instrument, extends this interest in ethical and community-oriented finance.
Membership
He is a Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, the national professional body of Malaysian accountants, which oversees professional development and standards for the accounting profession. He also holds a fellowship with the International Management Center.
He has been a chartered member of the Institute of Internal Auditors since 2005. The institute is an international professional association of internal auditors that sets professional standards for internal audit practice, and he became a Certified Internal Auditor of the Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia in 2009.
