(American Southwest Indian artists working in metal, clay,...)
American Southwest Indian artists working in metal, clay, wood, textiles, and paint have proudly left their individual hallmarks on their work-and until now there has not been a comprehensive source for identifying the marks. Barton Wright, the pre-eminent historian, curator, and proponent of these native crafts-people, has filled that void by collecting and organizing these hallmarks into a useful book. Compiled over many years of work with the craftspeople, and with the cooperation of one of their main organizing bodies, the Indian Arts and Crafts Association, Mr. Wright has with this book both made a useful tool for identification and left an important record of the work of these talented people. The information is alphabetically arranged with important personal data, tribal affiliation, working dates, materials used, and facsimiles of their marks.

First published in 1973 (Northland), this publication adds an important chapter to the body of work that brings Kachina art and scholarship together. The 237 Kachina paintings beautifully, descriptively rendered by Hopi artist Clifford Bahnimptewa (1938-1984), are part of the permanent collection of the Heard Museum (Phoenix). Born at the Hopi village of Old Oraibi on Third Mesa and a member of the Parrot Clan, Bahnimptewa learned to carve Katsina figures from his grandfather and his involvement in ceremonies helped the artist depict the figures in ceremonial motion.

Photographer Andrea Portago saw her first kachina in the early seventies in the studio of George Terasaki, from whom her friend and collaborator Andy Warhol was buying Native American art. When Alan Kessler's collection of kachinas was auctioned at Sotheby's in 1997, an extraordinary collection of classic kachina figures was unveiled that served as the impetus for Portago's exploration of the carvings. Presented here are classic-era (1880s-1940s) Hopi and Zuni carved dolls that have rarely been displayed. Portago gracefully photographed these rare figures using available light so as not to distort their colors, and to reveal their drama and passion.

CLIFFORD BAHNIMPTEWA'S meticulous paintings reflect the Hopi traditions that have been handed down to him through generations of Hopi ancestors. Bahnimptewa, a resident of Moenkopi on the Hopi Reservation has had no formal training, but learned the art of kachina-making from his grandfather of Old Oraibi. Bahnimptewa belongs to the Parrot Clan and now paints and makes kachina dolls on a full-time basis. He and his wife and five children are active participants in social and religious activities of the Hopi tribe.
