Tim McLaurin was born on the 14th of December, 1953 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, United States; the son of Reese Alexander and Rowena Darlene McLaurin.
As a child, Tim McLaurin studied at Cape Fear Regional High School where he was a forward on the varsity basketball team. He then graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1986.
Tim McLaurin worked various jobs, including carnival snake handler, truck driver, and construction worker. During Tim McLaurin’s two-year tour with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1972 to 1974, he served in Panama, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, then later spent a year in Tunisia with the Peace Corps in 1982-83.
Once he started to publish his writing, he went on to teach as an instructor at the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and North Carolina State University where he was a professor of creative writing from 1991 to 2002.
McLaurin wrote the first draft of his first novel “The Acorn Plan” in 1988 while living in Tunisia, “Woodrow's Trumpet” in 1989, “Keeper of the Moon: A Southern Boyhood” in 1991, “Cured by Fire” in 1995, “Lola” in 1997, “The Last Great Snake Show” in 1997, “The River Less Run” in 2000. “Another Son of Man” McLaurin's final novel, was completed just days before his death in July of 2002.
Tim McLaurin left behind an impressive body of work including the novels The Acorn Plan, Woodrow's Trumpet, Cured by Fire and The Last Great Snake Show, the narrative poem Lola, and the memoirs Keeper of the Moon: A Southern Boyhood and The River Less Run. Cured by Fire won the 1995 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for fiction.

2004McLaurin was married three times. His first wife was Janelle Clark and the second - Katie Earlie. Tim’s last marriage was with Carol. He had two children, Meghan and Christopher.
