Since 1970 he has been chairman of the Photography Department at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Previously, he was employed as an instructor of Puerto Rican Studies at Rutgers University (1973-74) in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and of photography at the Parsons School of Design in New York City (1965-70). He also worked as a resident color photographer for Joseph Papp's Public Theater in New York City (1966-72).
The photographer's point of view, or opinion, is that "the camera is the vehicle which interprets. My style is confrontation," he states," and the format is 35mm.
Fernandez has been a member of the Massachusetts Council on the Arts since 1975, and of Alexey Brodovitch's Design Laboratory since 1968. He also received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1970.
