He was trained in architecture in local offices of New York and completed his studies in Paris.
After being employed as draftsman by the late Bertram Goodhue and later by the firm of Warren & Wetmore, Mr. Levitan opened his own office in the city in 1907, and during his practice designed several banks, theatres and apartment houses. One of his latest and most important works was the House of Detention for Women at Greenwich Avenue and West 10th Street.
