He began work with the late Oliver W. Marble, an early practitioner, and in 1893 entered the office of Henry R. Wilson where two years later he became a junior partner under the firm name of Wilson & Marshall. From 1902 through 1905 Mr. Marshall practiced alone, and in that period designed the Illinois Theatre (no longer standing) and the ill fated Iroquois Theatre, both in Chicago.
The firm of Marshall & Fox was organized in 1905, and until the death of Mr. Fox in 1926 the partners planned and executed many large commissions. Among their major works in Chicago was the Blackstone Hotel (awarded the A. I. A. Medal of Honor in 1910); the Blackstone Theatre; Morrison Hotel, 1915; Drake Hotel, 1919; Edgewater Beach Hotel, 1921; the Steger Building; Burlington Office Building; and the Sheridan Trust & Savings Bank, 1924, The firm also designed the Mutual Life Insurance Co. Building in Philadelphia and the Maxine Elliot Theatre in New York.
After 1926 Mr Marshall practiced without associates, and in that latter phase of his career continued to maintain the high standards of his chosen profession. The Edgewater Beach Apartments, Lawsonia Club Hotel, and the Drake Tower, all in Chicago, were among his late works.
