Brooks was born on December 29, 1885 in Columbus, Ohio, United States; the son of Nathaniel Wilson Brooks and Rae (Saunders) Brooks.
Brooks received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1906. Six years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Gottingen University.
Brooks began his career as an assistant chemist at National Bureau of Standards (nowadays National Institute of Standards and Technology) in 1906. A year later he took a position of a research chemist at Bureau of Science. Then in 1912, Benjamin became a fellow at Carnegie Mellon Institute and held it for five years.
Also in 1913, he was appointed a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1917, Brooks served as a chief chemist at Commercial Research Company. In addition, in 1919, he took a position of a chemical engineer at Mathieson Alkali Works. Since 1924, he was a consultant chemist. Benjamin worked as a petroleum consultant to Venezuela from 1940-1941 and consultant on United States Mexican Oil Commission in 1942.

2012Brooks was a member of American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, London Institute of Petroleum Technology, Delta Upsilon, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
In 1909, Benjamin Brooks married Sarah Osgood. They had four children.
