It is now some eight years since I undertook a typographical exhibit of the sources of the Hexateuch. The work, at first planned to present the sources, from Genesis to Joshua, was found too voluminous and reduced for The Genesis of Genesis, (S tudent Pub. Co., Hartford, Ct., 1892) to include only Genesis and the first twenty chapters of Exodus. Even this was found to be too long, and the material prepared on the first half of Exodus remained over. At the same time the series of critical discussions on Genesis published in Hebraica, Oct., 1890, and subsequently, was continued by a similar series in the Journal of Biblical Literature (vols. ix-xii. 1890-1893) on JE in the middle Books of the Pentateuch. The surprisingly cordial welcome accorded me by critics at home and abroad, and the excellent account given by the publisher, have suggested a new volume, independent indeed of the Genesis of Genesis, but of similar form and character, continuing the analysis to the end of the Pentateuch. We reach thus, with the death of Moses, a convenient stopping-place, though by no means the conclusion of the documents. The period between this event and the death of Joseph, includes the whole Story of the Exodus in its three great divisions, Deliverance from the Bondage of Egypt, Constitution of the Nation, and Wandering in the Wilderness. If occasion serve, the analysis of the three sources may be continued throughout the book of Joshua, and of the two older through Judges and part of Samuel down to the founding of the monarchy, under the title, The Conquest of Canaan. Excerpt from The Triple Tradition of the Exodus: A Study of the Structure of the Later Pentateuchal Books, Reproducing the Sources of the Narrative, and Further Illustrating the Presence of Bibles Within the Bible It is now some eight years since I undertook a typographical exhibit of the sources of the Hexateuch. (Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel in Research and Debate: A ...)
Excerpt from The Fourth Gospel in Research and Debate: A Series of Essays on Problems Concerning Cerning the Origin and Value of the Anonymous Writings to the Apostle John The present volume has grown out of certain articles contributed by the author from time to time during the last ten years to technical and semi-technical journals on the vexed problem of the origin of the Fourth Gospel. It owes its semi-popular, semi-technical character to this fact. The controversial element implied in its title is also a reflection of the conditions of the time equally manifest in the articles which preceded it. A group of four appeared in the Hibbert Journal in the issues of April, 1903 (I, 3), January, 1904 (II, 2), January, 1905 (III, 2) and October, 1907 (VI, I). In these the effort of the writer was to bring before the intelligent lay public the merits of the great critical debate, the cause of the opponents of the traditional authorship being frankly espoused. At intervals before and during this period contributions were made also to The Expositor (1907), the Journal of Biblical Literature (1894, 1908), and the American Journal of Theology (1900) in the interest of research pure and simple into questions involved in the problem. The volume begun as nothing more than a reproduction of these two groups of articles, somewhat revised and supplemented, naturally reflects, even in its present greatly developed and altered form, the two aspects of current discussion which called forth the material of its substratum. Knowledge of the fact just stated may be of service to the reader, but the fact itself needs no apology. Whether fortunately or unfortunately - and the effects are not all unfavorable - biblical criticism is forced to build with one hand on shield and spear, the other on the trowel. PREFACE No man can pretend to have seriousIy examined the historical basis of the Christian faith who has not to some extent applied the ordinary processes of historical criticism to the Gospel of Mark, the earliest extent embodiment of the evangelic story. The present volume is offered as an example and aid to serious and impartial but non-technical investigation in this field. The form adopted combines critical analysis of the substance with exegesis in detail. It is chosen for the purpose of exhibiting the results of the higher criticism. Thc recent general acknoledgment that in Mark we have the oldest canonical Gospel, an embodiment of the accepted outline of Jesus career, already stereotyped when Matthew and Luke were written, has brought forth a succession of splendid contributions to the purely exegetical interpretation of this Gospel. To say nothing of the great German authorities, our own Good and Sweet have added greatly to the resources of philological exposition, and Menzies has given new light from the historical side. But that which the intelligent layman most requires has not been placed within his reach. The richest fruits of modern biblical study have come from the field of the higher criticism. Documentary analysis of the sources has been eagerly pursued by authorities such as Wernle, SchmiedeI, Weiss, Wellhauscn, Harnsck, Loisy, Sir John Hawkins, Burtan, and Burkitt. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

We no longer attempt to say, Thus the sacred writer conceived the event to have been, therefore thus it was; for we have four sacred historians, no two of whom conceive the event in just the same way.
