This edition includes, in addition to the most pertinent sections of The Fable's two volumes, a selection from Mandeville's An Enquiry into the Origin of Honor and selections from two of Mandeville’s most important sources: Pierre Bayle and the Jansenist Pierre Nicole. Hundert's Introduction places Mandeville in a number of eighteenth-century debates--particularly that of the nature and morality of commercial modernity--and underscores the degree to which his work stood as a central problem, not only for his immediate English contemporaries, but for such philosophers as Hume, Rousseau, and Kant. The selections are substantive enough to faithfully represent Mandeville the social theorist, and compact enough to be used in courses that can afford to spend no more than a week on his work.

It used to be that everyone read the "notorious" Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733). He was a great satirist and come to have a profound impact on economics, ethics and social philosophy. "The Fable of the Bees" begins with a poem and continues with a number of essays and dialogues. It is all tied together by the startling and original idea that "private vices" (self-interest) lead to "public benefits" (the development and operation of society).

(In Free Thoughts on Religion, The Church & National Happi...)
In Free Thoughts on Religion, The Church & National Happiness, prophetic forecaster Bernard Mandeville delves into the dynamics of contemporary consumer culture. Here he presents salient commentary of the measured, steady evolution from our prehistoric predecessors to the modern society we know today. Initial chapters investigate religious issues including the nature knowledge, the societal impact of rites and ceremonies, and ongoing debates about Christian mysteries such as the Holy Trinity and the concept of free will. Subsequent chapters address "hot button" issues ranging from the politics of the church to the use of religion to assess the balance of powers in Britain's government. This volume includes: . On Religion, . Of Outward Signs of Devotion, . Of Rites and Ceremonies in Divine Worship, . Of Mysteries, . of Free-will and Predestination, . Of the Church, . Of the Politicks of the Church, . Of Schism, . Of Tolleration and Persecution, . Of the Reciprocal Behaviour between the Clergy and Laity, . Of Government, and . Of National Happiness. BERNARD MANDEVILLE (1670-1733) was believed to have been born in Dort or Rotterdam in the Netherlands into a family of medical doctors. He was educated at the Erasmian School in Rotterdam, and eventually studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Leyden, receiving his M.D. in 1691.

Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733) was a philosopher, political economist, and satirist, best known for The Fable of the Bees, or Private Vices, Public Benefits. Mandeville's views of human nature were seen by his critics as cynical and degrading, but he endeavored to show that all social laws are the crystallized results of selfish aggrandizement and protective alliances among the weak. His A Letter to Dion was "occasioned by his Book Called Alciphron, or the Minute Philosopher."

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Doctor of Medicine University Leyden, 1691.
Satirical writer whose doggerel poem, Grumbling Hive., introduced the concept of public benefit which was derived from the sum of what might be regarded as private vices. He developed this into the more substantial Fable of the Bees. The vices he describes— luxury, pride, greed, envy, avarice — all stimulate commercial and manufacturing activity.
This amounts to a description of a laissez faire economic system, though Mandeville also favoured judicious State management to promote trade, agriculture, et cetera His paradox offended many, but his book
was widely read and its lesson was taken by Hume and Smith.
Physician, England, 1699.
