Kendler received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from New York University in 1955. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan.
Kendler began his career as a research assistant at California Teachers Association in 1958. Two years later he took a position of an editor at A. S. Barnes & Company, Inc. Then in 1962, Bernhard became a copy editor at J. B. Lippincott Company. Also he served as a managing editor, editor and executive editor of Cornell University Press from 1963 to 2005.
Kendler is a member of American Studies Association.
On December 12, 1975 Bernhard Kendler married Jill Ferguson.
