Hite was born on August 18, 1866 in Morgantown, West Virginia, United States; the son of Isaac and Catherine (Hennen) Hite.
Hite received a Master of Science degree from West Virginia University in 1890. Also he studied at Johns Hopkins University from 1891 to 1895.
Hite began his career as a fellow of chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in 1893. Since 1895 he was a chemist at West Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. Also Bert served as a professor of organic chemistry at West Virginia University from 1895 to 1898. Since 1898 he was a professor of agricultural chemistry at the same university and chemist at West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey.
