Beth Shepherd earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Rider College (now Rider University), Lawrenceville, New Jersey, in 1971, and a Master of Arts in Photography from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, in 1978.
Beth Shepherd served an apprenticeship with Larry Colwell from 1970 to 1972. Since 1971 she has been managing director and an instructor at Photo Graphics Workshop in New Canaan, Connecticut. Beth Shepherd has also been a professor at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, since 1975. She uses black-and-white, except in her SX-70 photos, specializing in portraiture and documentation of her travels in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.
