Betty Erickson was born on October 11, 1923, in Taft, California, United States. She is the daughter of John Cooper Henderson Douglas Young and Erva Edna (Lincoln) Young, who deceased in 1938.
Erickson graduated from the College (now University) of the Pacific with a bachelor's degree in 1945 and obtained her master's degree from Mills College in 1952.
Erickson started her career as a master teacher at public schools in Stockton and Alhambra, California between 1945 and 1951. She then became a demonstration teacher at Mills College and worked there till 1952.
She returned to teaching only in 1966, when she became an elementary school teacher in Bellevue. Two years later she started working as a reading teacher at schools in Prince William County and since 1994, Erickson worked as a freelance writer and as a volunteer reading recovery teacher at Springwoods Elementary School in Woodbridge.

2000Erickson is a member of the Reading Recovery Council of North America, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and Phi Delta Kappa.
Erickson married Richard Baldwin Erickson on November 29, 1952. The couple has 9 children: Terry A. Erickson Dodson, Gregory S., John Jeffrey, Mark K., Pamela S. Erickson Escarsega, Timothy F., Donn Bradley, Sara J. Erickson Parry and Caris A. Erickson Goryachev.
