A native of the Isle of Manitoba capital, Douglas, Henderson was educated at Ballakermeen and Street Ninians High School, gained a Professional Diploma in Management from Open University and followed a career in nursing before going into politics. In 2004 he was made a Minister by Richard Corkill before being sacked within a year by Chief Minister Donald Gelling MLC.

He is also a member of the Transport & General Workers Union and the Celtic League.
