He is also Director of the Visualization and Intelligent Systems Laboratory and the Center for Research in Intelligent Systems at the University of California, Riverside. He was the first Founding Faculty of the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside and served as the Founding Chair of its department of Electrical Engineering from 1991-1994. His current research interests are computer vision, pattern recognition and data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, image processing, image and video database, graphics and visualization, robotics, and human-computer interactions, and biological, medical, military and intelligence applications.
He received his Bachelor of Surgery (with honors) in Electronics Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (Banaras Hindu University) and Mechanical Engineering (with distinction) in Electronics Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India.
In addition, he received a Diploma in German from Banaras Hindu University. Bhanu has previously been on the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Utah, and has worked with Ford Aerospace & Communications Corporation, Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique-France, and International Business Machines Corporation San Jose Research Laboratory. Immediately before coming to University of California, Riverside, he held the position of Senior Honeywell Fellow at Honeywell Incorporated.
Bhanu is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (American Association for the Advancement of Science), the International Association of Pattern (IAPR), and the International Society for Optical Engineering (International Society for Optical Engineering).
