Background
Bokusai Itakura was born in Kyoto, originally his name was Munetaka. He came of a long line of physicians who lived during the Azuchi Momoyama Period.

Career
Early in life Bokusai Itakura entered the Nanzenji Temple as a priest, but under the advise of Shingen Takeda studied medicine to become a physician under the name by which he is now known. Became attached to Ieyasu and lived in Edo.
