When young went to Osaka and learned the Dutch language and medicine.
Bokushin Oi started medical practice (1861) and later joined the Osaka Hospital. He became an assistant teacher at a middle school (1871) but resigned soon and became a trader of industrial chemicals and machinery. He also manufactured sulphuric acid. Founded the Iwa Railway, Osaka Electric Light and Nihon Table Salt companies and became a business leader in the Kansai District. He was appointed vice-president of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce (1891) and then a member of the Osaka Prefectural Assembly. Was elected to the House of Representatives from Mie Prefecture (1904 and 1909).
