Bonji Kawamo was born in the city of Oita in 1862.
Bonji Kawamo began his education at a private school at Bun (Oita Prefecture), and later proceeded to Tokyo to continue his studies by working his way through college.
Bonji was appointed teacher of Japanese and Chinese classics at Shukutoku Girls High School (1893) and then shifting to journalism became chief editor of Nagano Shimbun (1906). Leaving journalism Bonji founded Ryoikai Association (Ryoi is also pronounced Miitsu and means the august virtue of the Throne) and Dai Nihon Se- kaikyo (world religion) and spent the rest of his life traveling throughout the country preaching his new religious cult.
