Graduated from the Petersburg Theatre School, 1909. Pupil of M. K. Obukhov.
With the Mariinskii Theatre. Mainly character dancer. First productions as a choreographer at the Petersburg Liteinyi Theatre.
Influenced by M. M. Fokin. His aesthetics were influenced by the Russian acmeist poets. Later stressed the classical tradition.
Choreographer with the Mariinskii Theatre from 1914. After the October Revolution, took part in productions in various Petersburg theatres. At the head of the Russkii Romanticheskii Teatr, giving guest performances abroad, 1921-1926.
Emigrated. Choreographer with A. P. Pavlova’s company, 1928-1934. At the Colon Theatre, Buenos Aires, and with other theatres in Paris, Monte Carlo, Belgrade and Rome. With La Scala and Rome Opera, 1934, and the Metropolitan Opera, New York, 1938-1942, and 1945-1950.
Taught in Buenos Aires, and at the School of Ballet Repertory, New York. Worked also for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, and for Chicago Opera, 1956.
