From 1913 studied at Moscow Higher Technical College. In 1920’s graduate Vakhtangov’s Drama Studio.
In his youth performed with railroad amateur drama company. During Civil War served with Red Army. Co-founder and 1926-1939 actor, Vakhtangov State Theater, Moscow.
Major exponent of Soviet realistic style in stagecraft. Greatly influenced by esthetic views of Vakhtangov. One of first actors to portray Lenin on stage.
Also did film work; Roles: Cure in Maeterlinck’s “The Miracle of Saint Anthony” (1921). Lev Gurych in Lcnskiy’s “Lev Gurych Sinichkin” (1924). Anton in Leonov’s Barsuki (The Barsuks) (1927).
Malko in Afinogenov’s Dalyokoye (The Distant Past) (1930). Polonius in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. (1932); Yegor in Gorky’s Yegor Buly- chyov i drugiye (Yegor Bulychyov and Co) (1932).
Lenin in Pogodin’s Chelovek s ruzh’yom (The Man With a Gun) (1937), etc. Film roles: Rogachyov in Lyotchiki (The Flyers). Mikhaylov in Pokoleniye pobediteley (Generation of Victors).
