Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. (Excerpt from The Psychology of Laughter An inquiry into ...)
Excerpt from The Psychology of Laughter An inquiry into the main psychological principles that underlie laughter and its various manifestations presents a number of difficulties. There is a wide range of the ludicrous, beginning with the nursery rhymes of Mother Goose, the coarse sallies of the clown, the zany, the cartoonist, the mimic, and the joker, and ending with the classical productions of Aristophanes, Lucian, Juvenal, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Moliere, Voltaire, Gogol, Thackeray and Dickens. The great Russian writer, Gogol, in his famous work "Dead Souls," lays special stress on the fact that a whole abyss separates the productions of elevated laughter from the contortions of the buffoon and the clown. No doubt Gogol is right: there is an abyss between the crude art of the buffoon and the "pearl of creative art" produced by the genius of comedy. Still the abyss can be bridged over. May we not similarly say that a whole abyss separates the crude idols of the stone age from the beautiful statues of a Phidias? The two extremes are, nevertheless, connected by a long series of intermediate steps. The abyss, however, as Gogol points out, is present. The difficulty is to bridge over the extremes and find the fundamental principles that underlie the almost infinite diversity of the manifestations of the ludicrous. (Excerpt from An Experimental Study of Sleep: From the Phy...)
Excerpt from An Experimental Study of Sleep: From the Physiological Laboratory of the Harvard Medical School and From Sidis' Laboratory Writers on sleep complain that little attention has been paid to the subject, that it is sufficient to open a text-book on physiology to be convinced of the fact that the physiology of sleep is almost entirely neglected, inasmuch as the school-physiologist usually dismisses the subject with a few phrases, often quite general and devoid of meaning. It is quite true that while one cannot as a rule be satisfied with the imperfect state of textbook-physiology which usually lingers in the hind ranks of the battle-ground of science, still one cannot blame the text-books for avoiding such a delicate subject, the nature of which is so uncertain and so highly problematic. (Excerpt from The Psychology of Suggestion: A Research Int...)
Excerpt from The Psychology of Suggestion: A Research Into the a Research Into the Subconscious Nature of Man and Society I am glad to contribute to this book of Dr. Boris Sidis a few words of introduction, which may possibly gain for it a prompter recognition by the world of readers who are interested in the things of which it treats. Much of the experimental part of the work, although planned entirely by Dr. Sidis, was done in the Harvard Psychological Laboratory, and I have been more or less in his confidence while his theoretic conclusions, based on his later work in the Pathological Institute of the New York State Hospitals, were taking shape. The meaning of personality, with its limits and its laws, forms a problem which until quite recently had to be discussed almost exclusively by logical and metaphysical methods. Within the past dozen years, however, an immense amount of the new empirical material had been injected into the question by the observations which the "recognition" by science of the hypnotic state set in motion. Many of these observations are pathological: fixed ideas, hysteric attacks, insane delusions, mediumistic phenomena, etc. And altogether, although they are far from having solved the problem of personality, they must be admitted to have transformed its outward shape. What are the limits of the consciousness of a human being? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. physician psychiatrist psychologist
Boris Sidis was born on October 12, 1867 in Kiev, Russia, the son of Moses and Mary or Elizabeth (Marmor) Sidis.
In 1908 he received the M. D. degree from Harvard.
His family was in comfortable circumstances, and he was tutored at home under the direction of his father until the age of seventeen, when he was sent to a government school at Kishinev in southern Russia. While there he was arrested for political reasons along with a number of other students, subjected to solitary confinement, and then sent home where he remained under police surveillance for several years.
In 1892 he entered Harvard as a special student. In 1893 he was regularly enrolled, and received the A. B. degree in 1894, the A. M. in 1895, and the Ph. D. in 1897.
He came to the United States in 1887 and settled in New York City. Being without funds, he worked in factories and gave private lessons for a living, and in his spare moments studied in the public libraries.
At Harvard he attracted the attention of William James, and it was undoubtedly due to James and Hugo Munsterberg that he became interested in psychology. In 1898 he published his first book, The Psychology of Suggestion, an attempt to explain the nature of the subconscious, especially in relation to personality.
The ideas he formulated on the subject of dissociation formed the basis of his future work. William James wrote a complimentary preface to the book, describing it as an original work, although he could not agree with all of Sidis' contentions.
Sidis returned to New York to accept the position of associate psychologist and psychopathologist in the recently established Pathological Institute of the New York State Hospitals from 1896 to 1901. While there he developed the method of treatment of functional psychoses and obtained some interesting cures.
In 1901 he became director of the psychopathic hospital and laboratory of the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. He published his Psychopathological Researches, Studies in mental Dissociation in 1902, contributions by Drs. G. M. Parker and W. A. White being included. He advanced the theory that psychoses were due to mental dissociations. One of his most interesting cases, the reassociation of the Rev. Mr. Hanna, who was suffering from amnesia and who had acquired a second personality, is described in his book Multiple Personality, written in collaboration with Dr. S. P. Goodhart, and published in 1905.
In 1904 Sidis returned to Massachusetts and settled in Brookline where he spent five very active years, studying medicine at the Harvard Medical School, practising psychotherapy, and continuing scientific research. Among the papers he published was "Studies in Psychopathology, " in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, March 14, to April 11, 1907, in which he described his theory of nerve energy in connection with psychotherapeutic cures. An Experimental Study of Sleep (1909), based on research performed in part at the Harvard Medical School through the friendly cooperation of Dr. W. B. Cannon, attempted to prove that monotony and limitation of voluntary movements tend to raise the threshold of psychomotor activities, and thus cooperate in the induction of sleep.
In 1909 he established the Sidis Psychotherapeutic Institute at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he continued to practise until his death.
The Psychology of Laughter appeared in 1913, and expounded the Freudian idea that forms of inferiority excite laughter. In his Symptomatology, Psychognosis, and Diagnosis of Psychopathic Diseases (1914), however, he takes issue with the Freudian doctrine. In the same year he published The Foundations of Normal and Abnormal Psychology, and in 1916, The Causation and Treatment of Psychopathic Diseases.
He was of a retiring disposition, and did not seek a following of pupils. He made few contacts with his colleagues, but the few friends he did make, among them Morton Prince, were his loyal admirers.

Sidis had a very active and forceful mentality. He possessed a genial and kindly nature, but was apt to express his opposition to what he considered fraudulent or dishonest with abruptness and vigor.
He was married in 1894 to Sarah Mandelbaum, and they had two children.
