Career
He is currently an assistant coach with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). Prefontaine began his playing career in the ECHL with the 1995-1996 Birmingham Bulls. Prefontaine retired from professional hockey in 1999, but continued to play senior hockey to skate in the 2004, 2005, and 2007 Allan Cups.
He also played for Team Canada at the 2005 Nagano Cup.

From 2001-2006 Prefontaine held the dual post of General Manager and Head Coach for the Wetaskiwin Icemen of the Capital Junior Hockey League. In 2011 he joined the Columbus Cottonmouths as an assistant coach.
