Brett H. Mandel was born on May 10, 1969 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He is the son of Stephan Mandel, a manufacturer's representative, and Sharyn Mandel (present surname: Dershovitz), a secretary.
Brett Mandel studied at Northeast High School. He graduated magna cum laude as a Public Policy major in 1991 from Hamilton College before receiving his Master's Degree in Governmental Administration from the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993.
Brett Mandel is senior advisor of Econsult Solutions. Most recently, Brett served as the executive director of Philadelphia Forward, a citizens’ organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement to make Philadelphia a vibrant city that is a preferred place to live, work, and visit. Philadelphia Forward successfully advocated for policy changes to improve tax fairness, legislation to reduce wage and business taxes, and Charter change to enact ethics reforms.
Previously, Brett served as director in the City of Philadelphia Office of the Controller from 1996 where he managed the efforts of the Financial and Policy Analysis Unit and oversaw consideration of a wide variety of issue areas relating to municipal governance, budgetary policy, and city government operations.
Brett also served as Assistant Policy Director of the Philadelphia Independent Charter Commission from 1992 to 1994, analyzing reforms for the only post-1951 Commission empowered to place propositions on the ballot for voter approval. Mandel was also an associate at Pennsylvania Economy League in Philadelphia during 1994-1996.
In addition, Brett is the author of "Minor Players, Major Dreams" (1997) and "Is This Heaven? The Magic of the Field of Dreams" (2002).
