Education: Workington Grammar School, The Queen"s College Oxford (1963-1966)(Wyndham scholar, Master of Arts, ed Cherwell), University of Wisconsin-Madison (Master of Arts) He began an The Master of Philosophy at London School of Economics, but left in 1970 and began working at GCHQ. In 1973 he began working at the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He served in the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations, and then in Singapore, Athens, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization before being appointed as United Kingdom Ambassador to Yugoslavia, and later served as Ambassador to Zimbabwe. After leaving the diplomatic service, he worked as a Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.
In retirement he served on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and the Special Immigration Appeals Commission.
He is an honorary fellow of the Queen"s College Oxford.
